I'm yet to actually make it to a meet-up. I actually talked about going to the last one with my wife and we probably would have gone had we not envisioned our children literally tearing the place down. Although sweet children, they are not JW children and do not sit still in trances. I have aptly bestowed upon my children the collective nickname "The Destroyers".
I am hoping to attend the next Meet-up in my area. Find a babysitter so The Destroyers won't make it impossible for me to hold a conversation. I am still somewhat new to the ex-jw experience despite the fact that I have been one since March of 1995. It has been like opening a door to the past that I have kept locked for many years. My wife knows only what my sister and I have told her about Jehovah's Witnesses, I think it would be a good experience. So Detroit area folks I look forward to meeting you.
Our meetup was good. I met two new people and saw two people I met at the last meetup. Unfortunately, I and another person were only able to stay for an hour this time. We've hung out till much later in the past. Also those of us who had met at past meetups have had our own informal nights out. I think its a great thing to be there to talk about common past experiences with people who understand or just talk about whatever with people who will talk to you and not shun you as JW's do.
Gwydion,
You're the one, of course, who has to decide, but last year in Toronto we had little children and babes in mothers' arms. Everybody seemed to enjoy having the kids there even though one baby wailed some of the time. Of course, if you have kids that tend to wander, you'd have to keep an eye on them.
I left JWs around the same time you did. Like Toronto's, the Detroit meet-up group is a special bunch, so I've heard, and I hope to meet them too someday.
Maxwell,
There've been times when I've also been able to hang around for only an hour. But, like you, I felt it was a great experience just the same. We're fortunate in the Toronto area in being able to meet with about 10 to 15 ex-JWs every week if we want to.

Herk,
Thanks for the bit of information regarding the meetups. I think that in time we may introduce "The Destroyers" , but for a first meeting I think it would be best if it were just my wife and I. Besides we never go anywhere without them so it will be nice to get away if just once.
The people at the venue in the NY/NJ Meetup didn't know what a Meetup was. They asked me: "Who is she?" Then they directed me across the street. As I was looking across the street at the address they were trying to send me to, a man with no shirt came out of the door, then a woman with a skirt up to there and slit in it even higher. More unsavories soon came out.
Needless to say I ventured no further. Eventually I found 2 others and we went to a McDonalds for about 3 hours.
Hi Gwydion - yep - the Detroit group is one great group of people - and we're always looking for more!!! Can't wait to meet you at the next one!
One of these days we're going to have to figure out a way to get a few of these groups together (toronto & detroit, etc.) - perhaps an apostofest in Windsor????
You know, that's true for some.
They would love to meet-up with many of us, but sometimes it is difficult to get a babysitter.
It sort of hit me, and I guess in some respects what may work out is having a PICNIC.
XJWs and their families together, children included. That could work.
In a closed area, like where we were, children (as adorable as they are) would get bored and fidgit. They are little powderkegs of energy. But a picnic is less confined and probably way more fun, and they'd meet up other kids of XJW parents.
Hmm....I think this would be a good idea. Not unique, but a good suggestion for those 'other' times.
Well, I know Obiwan was going to work on a Cedar Pointe "anti-JW" convention for this summer - so that's always an idea, but for the actual meet-ups - perhaps it would be easier to get all the names of the people that wish to participate & start and e-mail chain of some sort to agree on a different venue/time.
Hey, you know I just saw that.....Windsor meet-up. That'd be great, right across the river from Detroit. I'd still like to paddle across the Detroit River and meet-up with you all.
The Cedar Pointe gathering seems like an excellent idea. I'd LOVE to go to that. I'm so anxious to meet-up with my Michigan and Ohio (maybe New York/Pennsylvania) counterparts. That'd be great!
The one good thing about Windsor, at least your American currency is worth quite a bit on the Canuck side. Besides, we got some plates of poutine waiting for you there in Windsor. We can hit: Tunnel B-B-Q, Trevi Pizza, and a few other great Windsor eateries.
Later, we go to Aztec's with a truck load of beer.
It'll be FUN-FUN-FUN!
