Will America Ever Be Able To Beat England?

It seems that Americans are keen to get amongst the big boys when it comes to soccer skills as can be seen from the embedded page futher down this post.

However, I have a sneaky feeling that Americans might well be lacking in the genetic skills department when it comes to actually understanding the finer points of the noble art of soccer, let alone having any natural aptitude for the game. This is a an excerpt from a book by Bill Bryson, a very popular American author who keeps us Brits amused for hours with his experiences of living in England. This is Bill's account of his first ever attempt to play soccer:

"I had watched football (soccer) on TV and I thought I had a fair idea of what was required, so when one of the team lofted a ball in my direction, I decided to flick it casually into the net with my head, the way I had seen Kevin Keegan do it. I thought it would be like heading a beachball - that there would be a gentle 'ponk' sound and that the ball ball would lightly leave my brow and drift in a pleasing arc into the net. But of course it was like heading a bowling ball. I have never felt anything so startlingly not like I expected it to feel. I walked around for 4 hours on wobbly legs with a big red circle and the word MITRE reverse imprinted on my forehead, and vowed never again to do anything so foolish and painful."

    Here's the page:

So then, what do you reckon? Will The US ever be able to compete against the big boys in the World of Football?

England winning last night had no influence whatsoever as to my decision to write this post.

Last I checked the US women's team wasn't too bad. Honestly, most Americans really don't care about soccer. It's about as popular with most American's as professional bowling or volleyball. I've caught updates on the World Cup on the local sport's news but I don't think I've ever watched a whole game. I don't get what is so exciting about the game. Give me hockey or (American) football anyday!

    Lol....

    Fine post.

I remember Alexi 'Wild Man' Lalas heading home the 2nd goal in our 2-0 deafeat away to the Yanks a while ago when Turnip was in charge. That was humiliating enough, but I have still got a suspicion the Yanks will beat us soon, judging by how well they played at the World Cup.

I remember at France 98 when USA played Iran, and Iran won 3-1. That was a fine moment, but I think the American's are rapidly rising to the top, I hate to say it, but they seem to have the will to be the best.

The gentleman seems to be overlooking the fact that most Americans can trace their ancestor to the British Isles, this Yank included. So, it stands to reason if Yanks are genetically inferior then you so are you Brits. Don't brag too quickly, it may come back and bite you in the arse.

I thought Americans and Brits were friends. American's Genetically inferior? NO. Militarily Superior? Yes. Musically inferior? Yes. Let's face it, the British have given us Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and on and on. We give the world Marilyn Manson and Hank Williams Jr. Athletically Superior? Yes. We've got more Black guys.(no offense).

    Thanks,

    Integ.
