It seems the more focused or specialized an idividual's thinking/education, the more apt they are to develop 'blinders' as in 'tunnel vision'.
Engineers are notorious for this tunnel vision syndrome. Often oblivious to normal social skills, they go through life eating, sleeping, talking, their particular chosen discipline. Getting them to understand anything outside the box is often very difficult. Corporations go to considerable expense to help these 'focused' individuals to broaden their perspectives.
