Well we made it to Florida, but the journey was not exactly what I would call a fun one.
As many of you know, my fairly new SUV was totaled (by no fault of my own) one month before we were supposed to be making our big move. Well, we were forced to buy a car with limited income until the insurance company paid up. This car turned out to be an '87 Cutlass Supreme, which is an okay car, BUT we had to pull a trailer with it. (The car market up there was horrid. Trust me, this was the best we could do with the amount of money we had).
The car didn't appreciate having to tow a trailer. It had a very hard time, so much so, that it was on the verge of over-heating at all times. So what did we do? We had to keep the heater on full blast the entire trip, in order to blow the hot air off of the engine!! Do you realize what this means? It means that while driving through KS, TX, OK, LA, MS, AL and FL in 100 degree weather, we had to have the heat on the whole way!! No fun people!! Our feet were literally cooking! Oh and did I mention that we were forced to drive the car at 55 mph also to keep it from over-heating? So a 25 hour drive turned into a 45 hour drive.
Although we tried our hardest the car did over-heat once, but Jon was able to get us moving rather quickly. But, just when we think that we've got it made (only 150 miles from Orlando), the tire on the trailer blows out which for some reason causes the car to over-heat again in fairly busy traffic. Does the trailer have a spare on it? Ha! That would be too easy. So we had to sit there for five hours waiting for U-Haul to get somebody out there to fix it.
One other thing. We had our cat with us. Just for ambiance, she cried the entire time. This was especially annoying, SINCE I HATE CATS!!
Any good news? Well, my husband and I made the best of it. We sang stupid songs to keep ourselves awake, we played car games; we discussed everything from childhood memories to deep philosophical issues. We had as much fun as possible under the circumstances.
So what's happening right now? Well, we are going to look at 8 apartments tomorrow. We've already been approved at some of them, but we want to go check them out before we decide. I have a job lined up and hopefully Jon will be able to find one within the next month. He is a computer technician so this shouldn't be a problem. We will start trying to umm. . concieve after Jon is settled in with a job, and we will both continue our education next year; me majoring in Forensic Science and Jon in Information Technology.
Everybody, I'm really scared. . this is all so strange and wonderful. Right now everything is so surreal. I hope that I made the right decision to come here.
I think that this is the longest post that I've ever made, so I'll cut it short here before you fall asleep. I was happy to come to the board and see that I was missed after only a few days of absence. I'll be back with a vengeance in a week or so, so you watch out!
