Well Craig, without placing myself in a verbally contradictory situation:

I believe self deception is widespread. I also believe that everyone contradicts themselves. I believe everyone LIES. I must lie, or half lie, a dozen times a day on the job. So to call a person a liar or to say they are contradictory, actually, means nothing to me, for i think all men lie frequently and contradict themselves frequently. I believe these things are a product of the working of the human mind and are unavoidable.

I also believe there are people who are convinced in their own minds that they do not lie and do not contradict themselves.

To me, such people are self decieved and live in illusion.

Where do we draw the line between hypocrite and denial?

This is a strange subject for me, looking at the past feelings I had when I was struggling to "sh%% or get off the pot" per sa'.

I can relate to the hypocrite description but probably not in the same sense as you might. I felt like a hypocrite because I could not go along with many teachings and therefore figured I was doomed so why bother to keep trying. I couldn't make myself believe certain things that were essential to believe.

RF & plum, you both make very interesting points.

    I'll follow up tomorrow (PST)

    Thanks,

    Why?

Its a bit blatant to call people a "hypocrite" unless that person warrants the forwardness. Being on the receiving end of being called it feels insulting. I have seldom been called it (though I would admit to being one sometimes) but I'm sure I wouldnt appreciate it unless it was said in jest. Its ok to self confess it but people step over a barrier when they freely place that tag on someone else. (I guess that itself sounds hypocritical "I can say it but you cant" )

The only time I have heard someone called a hypocrite was in the context of an insult, this probably shadows my interpretation.

If a hypocrite admits he's a hypocrite, is he still a hypocrite?

    Maybe, just liar?

    LOL! Good questions, Craig!

They taught things I didn't believe, but I went to the meetings and, by my presence there and by my "non-answers" I in essence supported something that I didn't believe

    I believed 100% what the WTS taught me. I guess then I wasn't a hypocrite...just an idiot

    Craig,

Edited to add: I appologize for posting this in this thread, thought I was on another.......getting old ya know.

Lots of history of this type of behaviour on ex-jw boards. In fact I think those early day's set the tone, or example for alot of those who continue to demean and attack.

Simon is in the process of changing the flow, endeavoring to get people who were schooled in the 'negative' to either abandon those tactics or quit.

I for one appreciate your taking a stand on this issue.

    Danny

Ps Ever notice how those who continue to demean and destroy, use the same words, the same tactics others have used for years?

Brummie makes a valid observation regarding labeling someone a hypocrite.
