Jehovah was okay with shirts that had pictures of things.-animals, flowers, etc. But, Jehovah was highly offended it it had writing on it.
Aren't you glad the WT doesn't go beyond the things written in the Bible?

FLORIDABORN- Mary Poppins was a " witch " ? LOL. Could have fooled me. I thought she was just Julie Andrews with a great singing voice !
Sideburns seem to be a popular theme in the early nineties. Elders seemed to be very concerned about how long they were and they might identify you as gay.
Shiny or Bright colored suits - same thing. This was when purple/turquoise suits were all the rage in the Spanish conventions.
Bottom line- anything that might identify you as gay was a no-no. Doesn't seem like much has changed.
I remember a visiting Sunday speaker saying that Football(American not Soccer) was bad. We as Christians shouldn't watch it, or play it. It was violent, like the gladiator events in ancient Rome.
Needless to say, the brothers were bugging out about that statement. After the meeting they were going up to their Elders saying, "That's not true, right". "He cant say that, right?" They were all nervous they were gonna loose their Sunday football, and they were scared, lol.
Plus, a lot of them, including myself, although I was younger, would play softball after the Sunday meetings during the summer, and FOOTBALL during the Fall and Winter. It was pretty big, with about 2 or 3 congs coordinating and meeting at the field. It was mostly harmless, and they got nervous they were gonna loose that too, cause of that speaker.
Lucky for them, they were told by THEIR elders it WAS cool, so they blew a sigh of relief. That being said, a year or two later, there were a few "rogue" games of football happening, and these brothers were playing full on tackle football, not the usual 2 hand touch games. Well those same brothers who "fought" for their football watching and playing, CONDEMNED those brothers that were playing the tackle games, and got them stopped by having the Elders "council" them not to play tackle. Funny how things work.
Another stupid comment from a brother on the stage, was, as some others mentioned too, that you shouldn't wear shirts or T shirts with writing on them. Really? Whats the problem with that? I remember a bunch of bros and sisters saying "All I own are T shirts with writing". Then they started comparing which shirts they had, and what they all said, lol. Nobody really gave it much thought, lol.
i would agree with that speaker. football is a violent game. certainly gladiatorial. i hate football.
The brother in our area took the time to explain this to us sisters: they could call undue attention to our breasts while someone was trying to read it. We wouldn’t want to do that now would we?
PO of our congregation gave a talk and said "if you eat turkey at Christmas time, who do you think you are kidding?" Eating turkey is celebrating Christmas. Lol.
We also had an occasion where the elders got word that a group of us had planned to go to a concert on a meeting night and they went and visited each one of us and made it clear that we would be marked if we were to do so.
@ Stan livedeath - I agree Football is definitely a violent sport. I personally do not care much for it either. I just think that they, it was def not me as I was about 13 yrs old at the time, thought this visiting brother didn't have the right to say its wrong to watch it. I guess that instead it should be a "conscience" matter, they felt.
Personally, I don't know if I would compare it too actual gladiator events, though. Yes, it is violent, and rough, but nobody is fighting to the death, getting beheaded by swords, or being torn to pieces by wild animals, lol. It is definitely one of the rougher sports. Also, hockey is a rough one too, but Idk if I would go as far as to say its comparable to gladiatorial events. That's just my opinion though, as this is yours, no biggy, I respect ya if you feel that way.
