would you concede that a religion which includes in its ranks the likes of Fr.Georges Lemaitre, Louis Pasteur, Gregor Mendel, Blaise Pascal, etc., etc. etc. deserves a little more credit than the Watchtower? - Slutaris

What do you want credit for exactly? A lot of people throughout history have made valuable contributions to the world in spite of their risible superstitions.

Is a historic Church like the Catholic Church, which has admitted and apologized for its grave errors and abuses, which are bound to happen in 2,000 years, really on par with the Watchtower?

No the Catholic church are not on par with the Watchtower. You are in a league of your own.

Your crimes are not historical and inevitable. Child sexual, physical and emotional abuse is a current reality. The victims are still being denied justice and the abusers are still being protected all over the world. It is utterly contemptible. You should be ashamed to identify yourself with such a criminal organisation.

Millions of the poorest people on earth are still being denied effective family planning that would revolutionise their lives. Millions of children are still raised with fear of eternal damnation if they fail to comply with your cult's edicts. Homophobia is alive and well at the Vatican.

to lump all Christians in with the Watchtower speaks to a total lack of objectivity on your part.

    Where did I do that?

The fundamental flaw in the Watchtower is not that is promotes or rejects specific dogmas. It is the same flaw that is shared by every religious person - they value faith over evidence.

Swapping one religion for another is simply trading one set of superstitions for an alternative one.

The damage done by membership of a religion varies. The Watchtower does a lot of harm to its members. Other religions are more benign. All of them are irrational. The RC church also happens to be burdened the ghosts of tens of thousands of abused children. Shame on you.

It would be nice if you'd recognize that there are very intelligent people who hold religious beliefs, and that just maybe this doesn't constitute a lapse of their reason.

    When you wrote:

A christian apologist trying to "free" members of a cult is the moral equivalent of a drug dealer hanging around a rehab clinic.
The crimes of the hierarchy are crimes and I won't whitewash that. (In fact I only donate money to parish projects or organizations I'm involved with for this very reason) But I am not personally ashamed of what I had no personal involvement with anymore than you should be ashamed of atheists who've committed genocide in the name of whatever atheistic regime.

Cofty, there's actually little I enjoy more than a good philosophical argument with someone approaching a topic in good faith and with mutual respect for an opponent. But I'm not going to waste anymore time responding to you or any other atheists spilling their bile against all religion on this forum. I've got better things to do than subject myself to bigotry. While there are certainly some reasonable and level headed people here, the forums are filled with childish arguments and self righteous diatribes against religion.

    Later!

And nobody works harder to do that than I do. Where are your threads dismantling Watchtower doctrine?

If you wish to see yourself as a science teacher and destroyer of bible myths, that is fine. You are off topic.

Exposing myth is how we oppose the Watchtower. It is the topic.

Attempting to convert JWs to a different cult should be opposed by everyone.

Of course intelligent people can still hold to risible superstitions.

What's your point? Are you suggesting we should respect stupid ideas because some intelligent people believe them? Surely not.

I am not personally ashamed of what I had no personal involvement with anymore than you should be ashamed of atheists who've committed genocide in the name of whatever atheistic regime.

Not believing in the grandiose claims of theism does not make me a member of any group. I value rational thinking, humanitarianism and an evidence-based worldview. Regimes that commit atrocities are the opposite of what I advocate so why should I be ashamed of their crimes?

On the other hand you are an apologist for a contemptible organisation that continues to hide its child abusers from justice. It still promotes homophobia and denies effective family planning to millions of the world's poorest people.

It still emotionally abuses children with fear of eternal torments.

We haven't even mentioned your laughable dogmas yet.

I'm not going to waste anymore time responding to you or any other atheists spilling their bile against all religion on this forum. I've got better things to do than subject myself to bigotry

This is what we call an ad hominem attack. it's what people do when they are afraid of confronting the evidence.

My objections to religion are very well informed. I was an evangelical for 9 years after I left the cult. I know in great detail exactly what it is I oppose.

take some time to detox, and then to take a study the various world religions with a critical but respectful eye.

Give me one single reason to respect your religion.

Not all religion is what you've experienced in the Watchtower.

No some of it is even worse.

I think the best thing you can hope for is that your site leads Catholics away from joining the JW's.

The following are a few ideas that come to mind for future articles. On each of them the JW's teach something diametrically opposed to what RC's teach:

    • Was it a Cross or was it a Stake? You could go into history, archaeology, medical evidence etc. (You could point out that despite what JW's say, the only religion that requires you to believe the wooden implement was a specific shape, is JWism.)
    • How to read the bible. Should it be read as a literal book of history and science, or is that missing the point.
    • Is a belief in evolution inconsistent with a belief in God?
    • What does the bible really teach about blood?
    • Is it right or wrong to read the bible for yourself on your own, in order to interpret it? (You might mention Romans 14:1)
    • Presumptuously speaking on behalf of God - False predictions, and what they indicate (Deut 18:20-22, Luke 21:8, Matthew 7:15, Matthew 24:11 and 24:22-27)
    • How to interpret Revelations: Who was the "beast".
    • Trinity: May be difficult to accept, but it is clearly in the bible, unless you "translate" it out.
    • History of the use of "Jehovah" in bible translations. Also, why the word Yahweh appears in some parts of the bible but not others.
    • Shunning: Would Jesus do it?
    • Peddlers for profit (refer 2 Corinthians 2:17). A history of Watchtower and colportage.
    • What does Jesus teach a Christian to do. (emphasis on charity, caring for poor, sick, unfortunate etc)

Why are you interested in targeting JWs?

Also, don't be too flattered by the two witnesses you know "commending you for your Bible knowledge" they say that to everyone. They flatter people in the hopes of recruiting them, funny that you fell for it - just a heads up btw.

Witnesses often lavishly commend interested persons for their knowledge and good questions, even if those questions are critical of the JW organization. It is part of the smooth talk that is big on impression management and little on sincerity because once they hook you, your "good questions" are no longer good.
