Freedom and Gambit: Even though I am very vocal about what 'I' happen to like and admire in art, as well as what I don't like...

I DO have one particular rule that I think supercedes all the rest in terms of art, music, and whatever else:

    simply put:

'If you like it, and it brings you joy - then it IS good.'

I spent quite a few hours looking at the different ways he portrays light (as well as paints it)...

I think most peoples criticism of the Thomas Kinkades of the world is that they do the same damn picture (or variation thereof) over and over and over and over and over and over, till they have a billion dollars, and I have a headache.

My dad's wife's mother ADORES thomas kinkaide, and one unfortunate summer i had to spend a week in her house while i was visiting dear old dad...and this woman's house literally looks like thomas kinkaide's brain threw up all over the whole thing. kinkaide paintings and prints and rugs and shower curtains.... i swear her couch even had thomas kinkaide upholstry, no joke. after that i could never really like to look at another thomas kinkaide. it's kind of like if you eat the same food for every meal every single day, and you get so sick of it eventually you'd rather just not eat at all than eat another bite of that same thing....

    Name the Artist

Gee freedom, and I thought you and I agreed on everything. *rolls eyes* Wyland is a formulaic, non-entity. I used to work for someone who claimed to be an artist. All he did was churn out the same tripe over and over ad nauseum. Not that he wasn't meticulous and somewhat talented but, art should be about expression not the bottom line. I didn't say he doesn't have talent just that he doesn't fit my definition of an artist.

    Paul,

"If you can fool them into buying it... well then god bless... But that's not 'art' to me... It may as well be one of those damn singing fish for all I know... "

Have I mentioned how much I looooove you?

    Gambit,

"Thomas Kinkade is an artiste in my book... I've have also read some of his writings, and will confess that early in the healing process it was a blessing of a find. I spent quite a few hours looking at the different ways he portrays light (as well as paints it)... If I had half the aristic talent this man has, I would probably attempt to make a living with it also... "

Did you also know that he has apprentices paint over his canvas reproductions to make that "light" appear in the proper lighting? I had to sell his schlock for 4 years when his company took up residences at the gallery I was working for. I could not tell the differance between any of his "paintings" and had many a Kinkade afficianado get irked at me because of it. We had to read a 5 page biography on him and memorize the details of his life. Can you say control freak? We had to devote a certain portion of the gallery, near the front, to display his work. I was supposed to know the names of his freaking daughters for cryin out loud! One time we put some of his "Plein Air" collection on clearance (for some reason noone wanted to spend $300 on a non signed 16x20 canvas reproduction that wouldn't ever appreciate in value...hmmm) and you would not believe the almost religious condemnation we got over that. How dare we put Thomas Kinkade's work in *gasp* clearance. I couldn't stand the glazed look on people's faces when they spoke of, again, almost religious adoration of him. GAG! His paintings aren't that good and he is a pompous ass.

    Six and Tink,

I have no defense... It is true that Kinkade is not in the same category as Giger, Escher, and all the other great artists listed.
I feel like I made the mistake of calling a "cover band" musicians, or closer yet, calling Andrew Lloyd Webber a composer...

But why would I want to let personalities, business, society, and superb knowledge of a subject override my senses... I dont.

I'm out of my league in this thread... I will sit back and enjoy the show.

Aztec: Well what do you think of BOB ROSS aficionados? LOL... Used to run into those back when I worked in an art store (which, by the way, was a thankfully BRIEF period LOL) and they could be pretty dedicated too! Well,... he did seem like a real nice guy and all, what with his 'Happy' Rocks, and 'Good Little' trees.... But somehow seeing his big goofy afro head on paintbrushes and such.. kinda sets me off my lunch.

Ang: I really like Vettriano's stuff. If caught my eye the very first time I saw one. He does all these different widely-varied scenes, many with outlandish occurances being depicted, often with these semi-sinister titles... and yet there's an obvious recognizable style throughout them all that is entirely his own... Pretty much the sort of thing one WANTS to accomplish in art or music... Be highly vaied, take risks, and yet - retain a style throughout. Of course, his stuff is appearing on all kinds of commercial items now... But hey, It's the thing to do in this day and age anyways.

Gambit: Like i said - If any Kinkade did something for you that was positive- then It Is good. Back when he first started to gain a bit of popularity and I saw some of his stuff - I actually liked it a bit at first (like I said - I happen to like little European-looking cottages and houses) It wasn't until I started seeing him having entire galleries of the stuff (all looking very much alike) and had studied up on some art history - that I recognized that what he did was far more a formulae than a geniune artistic expression. Hell, If 'I' had to paint guady-colored cottages over and over and over again - I'd be BORED out of my freaking mind from a lack of expression... no matter what money I was making! - See my point? But Obviously a lot of people do like his stuff.. almost religiously (hmm.. wonder if I'll ever manage to have 'followers' when 'I' paint?? ....call em' 'The Shortall's' maybe... and people in art stores all over will cringe when one of them wanders in, like: "Psst... watch out! That guy over there? - Nuther one of em' 'Shortall' fukers..." LOL ....

Look at it this way, I know PLENTY of people that absolutely HATE anything that Picasso or Dali did, and consider them nothing more than a bunch of 'madmen'.... :o)

Angharad- I like those two alot !!!

I have to thank you once again for turning me on to Vettriano to begin with. The first time I saw his work was when you posted it in that thread several months ago. I've since purchased 2 of them and one is already on the wall- the other is waiting for matting and framing.

I just love Dance Me !! I wish I had a place for one- I'd buy it. But alas- I'm out of wall space for now. "In Thoughts of You" is also one of my favorites !!

The two I have- something about them reminds me so much of my father (who passed away when I was in 5th grade) The hats they have on are similar to the hats my dad and other men used to wear in the early 60's and "Billy Boys" reminds me so much of he and his brothers back then.

There was another artist I saw who had a similar style but his name escapes me right now. If I think of it, I'll post some of his work too.

    Thank you again Ang !!!!!

    XW
