If some lumberjack had got drunk and minced the tiger with a chainsaw I think I'd have the same dim view of them.

Stupidity takes many forms. I do agree that what was done was stupid.

I wonder if for some reason a child had gotten away from their parents and the soldier had shot the tiger to protect the child whether you still wouldn't choose to dog the military?

I am sure that there are just as many idiots in the UK and your constant niggling at America is really sad. We should of course emulate your countries choices then we can say have New Yorks Catholics and protestants fighting each other for hundreds of years and do nothing about it.

I agree, but then the lumberjack doesnt need his chainsaw when off duty to protect himself from the trees, does he?

The news story does not make it clear. Had the Tiger clawed the soldiers arm and was then in another part of the cage, or did it have a grip on his arm trying to chew it off?

Each of these conditions make for an entirely different veiw of the shooting, although neither condone the soldier being near the cage in the first place.

Duh! What a rediculous question ?! The fact is they weren't "saving" anyone, just being pratts.

Yes, there are probably more idiots in the UK than in Iraq right now ... see my topic here: Disgusted and ashamed to be British

I don't know why you chose to take this as "niggling at America" when it is nothing of the sort - just criticism of some of the lesser examples of the human genome.

Well heck yes Simon a friend of yours is being clawed by his own stupidity and you of course take the higher road and say "sorry but your an idiot" right??? You forget most of these soldiers are young men and yes young men do make mistakes as do some old men.

If a british soldier went into San Diego zoo and shot a magnificent animal which was also an endangered species, whether it was because he had a dumb friend or not, I think you would be highliy critical and rightly so. I would not try to defend it or claim that people being critical were doing so because "he was british" ... it would be because he was dumb!

I am being highly critical because it was a dumb thing to do.

Why not fire a warning shot? Oh no, that wouldn't do would it ...

Back in the days of the Raj shooting tigers was a very popular sport. Damn things ate the natives and looked good spread out on the polished wood floor in the vestibule. Take your Bombay Sapphire and tonic, strap your on your Remmy and mount your heiferlump and off you plod into the jungle.

Top Hole old chap. No sense of etiquette these colonists.

What a sad waste of a gorgeous animal.

The tiger was not at fault, it was the stupidity of trying to feed him through the bars. Idiots Idiots Idiots, doesn't matter if they were American, Iraqi or little green men.

The tiger was acting on instinct, its a predatory animal and was doing what comes naturally. My 6 year old would know not to go and stick his hand in the cage.

    Such a waste

Actually the dumb thing was done by the FIRST soldier.

Why not fire a warning shot? Oh no, that wouldn't do would it ...

Maybe a warning shot was fired but the Tiger didnt know what a gunshot was and that it was a danger to it.

We just dont know if the second soldier was saving the first from his own stupidity, or over - reacted and shot un-necessarily, the news story does not give enough information for anyone to make a firm judgement on this.

Also anyone who has been in a hostile situation will know that it is impossible to ' wind down ' just like that, the tension lasts for a long time, even in a ' safe ' environment, so over-reaction is entirely possible.

The fact that the tiger was shot is deplorable, but there is not enough information about the whole story to aportion blame(apart from to the first soldier) until all the facts are in.

Also, the story in the news is told by one man, are we sure that he is not biased in some way?

All anyone can say at this point is that the first one was an idiot for going near the cage at all.

    Edited to add

The tiger was acting on instinct

True, but then, so was the soldier who shot it.

    Still a waste though.

I agree, it was the first soldier who was being dumb. I don't blame the second for shooting it but the first for getting it shot.

At least it had some tasty fingers for a last meal though eh? I bet dumb people's fingers taste just as good.

Actually, I read it that they shot the Tiger after the incident, not "to save him". It does depend how justified it was.
