I see these idiots drive their Hummers around the city all the time. What's the point? Ohhh, when we have that one big snow storm a year, they will be able to go to the store for their milk and toilet paper. Other than that, I can't see the point.

Now if you were living in a remote area where this type of vehicle will be put to the best use, then I could see investing in that kind of vehicle, but for city/suburb driving.....come on!!!!

Here in Columbus, Ohio, the only people driving Hummers are rich people. The rich people happen to live across the street from me and work for The Limited Corp. The Limited Corp (owned by Les Wexner, Richest man in Ohio, net worth $2.4 billion, according to Forbes) takes care of it's employees. They can afford Hummers. (The Limited Corp owns Vicitoria's Secret, Bath & Body Works, Express, White Barn Candle Company, Aura Science and Henri Bendel) They recently spun off Abecrombi & Fitch and Limited Too.

*Rich People* are different than you and I. They like BMW's, Mercedes and Hummers. They drive them like crazy here. All cost about the same. All use lots of gas. Hummers are just the loud cousin of BMWs and Mercedes.

If they want to waste their retirement fund on Hummers, BMWs and Mercedes, let them. They are contributing to the local economy and helping to keeping the local econmy afloat. Without them and their money I would not be self-employed.....it is all a matter of degrees of separation.

    I like capitalism.

PS....Dan, try for a job with The Limited....

The H2 Hummer was never designed to be much of a off road vehicle. It is much like most other SUV's, designed to be driven on the streets.

I am suprised at the many vocal responses, and how so many people hate them. For most who do in fact buy them, it has nothing to do with a man having a small penis, or wanting to be the big dog.

These SUV's drive very well for what they are designed for, and is simply another of hundreds of other makes and models available to consumers every year in the car industry. When you actually look at the pricing, it is not that much more expensive than a fully equiped Suburban or Denali.

Quite a few cars cost in the same range as the H2, and that is simply the car of choice for some. I will not badmouth them, for I don't know the reason to do so. To be perfectly honest, I think part of the disgust for the car, is that most people cannot afford one. So they go around and bash those who have the more expensive cars, who have more money than they do.

One thing for certain, if you are around a group of people who can in fact own one of these cars, you don't hear some of the comments commonly heard around those who cannot afford it.

I for one, do not own one. However, I have seriously considered it. I will not apologize to anyone for wanting to put my family in a safe car. I will not be the type that gets all excited because I got a car that gets 40 miles to the gallon, but then will get destroyed if anything bigger than a housefly hits it.

I have an SUV (a Suburban). I have two kids, a dog and loads of gear (camping and otherwise) I feel completely justified in owning my SUV. I'd like to see a minivan tackle the Rocky Mountains - or my driveway for that matter. Here, where I live, if you don't have a four-wheel drive vehicle - you end up relying on your neighbors to take your kids to school/to get to work/grocery store. Yes, around here if we have a big snow (often) they don't run the school buses - but your kids are expected to be at school. There is no such thing as saying "Sorry I was late for work, but it snowed"

    All use lots of gas.

the hummer gets less than 10 mpg in the city. Inexcusable waste. I wish that our gas prices here were more like they are in Europe where fossil fuels don't get as much government subsidy. (a topic for another thread)

Hummers are just the loud cousin of BMWs and Mercedes.

embarrassingly loud. Yes, rich people are different than you and I. (winks at Teeny because I've seen your car and it ain't no beater!)

    freedom96,

yes, I am po'folk. However I don't bash people who drive Mercedes, Lexus, etc. Those are very comfortable, refined, luxurious cars. I think people do buy a Hummer purely to bolster a weak self image. Crass materialism.

    closer2fine,

It sounds like you live in an area where driving an SUV makes more sense. But let me say that I used to have a front wheel drive Honda Civic. I took it on several ski trips which involved driving through moderately heavy snow. I never once came close to getting stuck. Snow isn't that big of a deal to drive through in a regular car. Trucks are huge profit makers for the auto industry, so of course they have a vested interest in promoting the belief that you must have a big honkin' 4WD truck or SUV to handle snow, dirt roads, etc. You don't.

If we ever have a few kids, no way I'm gonna drive a minivan... we'll definitely get an SUV.

As far as I'm concerned, the new Hummers are just a bigger Tracker. Over the last few years, it seems the automotive industry has had one mold in different sizes. The original Hummers were alright I suppose, however you're talking to a man whose DREAM vehicle is a ' 68 longbox Land Rover.

I think too many people put too much emphasis on what things people have. Whether it be Hummers (yuck) or Beamers or little old yugos. Who cares.

Yes, rich people are different than you and I.

I don't know. I think I'm a pretty nice old coot. We're pretty well off, some would call us rich. When we retire (soon) we won't ever have to work again. But we're not jerks and understand that some people don''t have what we have or can't do some of the things we do now. That doesn't make them less than us, they just don't have $. If they're nice people who cares what they have.

Won't give away my profession since we're still around the dubs, just not active. But we never just had dub friends, rich poor whatever. We don't care.

I really like the H-1 ... if I could afford it I'd get one for me and one for Nick.

We have an SUV and utility truck. We live way out in Texas and believe me we need these vehicles. Beside you'd never make it up our rutted road w/o an SUV or truck. Nick runs his vehicles down. Mine is from '94 and I plan to make it last.

I do admit that for something affordable I've looked at the Nissan Exterra.

Hey did anyone see the Miss America pageant? One of the finalists has rebuilt a vintage car w/ her Dad, and she wants to race stock cars professionaly. If I hadn't wanted Miss Florida to win ,I'd have bet on the Stock car gal.
