Your conversation eerrily parrallells the one I had with one of my family members...almost word for word, except the person I was talking to was very defensive. They kept trying to turn the conversation back to what the soceity's official position was on abuse allegations thinking that that was a sufficient answer to my question. They then tried to turn the tables on me by implying that no answer would be good enough that didn't include an admission of wrongdoing by the WTS to which I replied that in the hour we'd been discussing this, this was the one answer they were trying to avoid.
They then turned their attention to the authenticity and the validity of the information itself, implying that it may have come from an apostate. I asked them from whom and what type of information would need to be presented to them that would remove all doubt that the this is what the soceity's action are and gave them the option of would a copy of the judges order be sufficient. They even called that in question claiming that people and judges lie all the time. They wouldn't form an opinion until they heard the soceity's version of events first. I asked them that did they really think that the soceity would publish an article for all to see detailing how they successfully sued a molestation victim who'd won a case against them and why. I asked them point blank how likely is that to happen. I was met with silence.
In the end and assuming the story was true, they were forced to admit that the WT is dead wrong morally in their pursuit of Vicki for damages and that it sets a very bad precedent. They were forced to admit that the motives of the organization itself was suspect and that they would be called into account for their actions by Jehovah himself.
I didn't pursue the matter any further than that. Belonging to the WT organization and believing that it's perfect and speaks for god is probably the single thing that's holding this persons life together at the moment even if it is all one big lie.
It's a bit frustrating not being able to convice her
very true indeed and that is why is should never be ones intention to CONVINCE someone belonging to a high control. instead all we can do is mentally challenge them to THINK and that is most frightening for most jw-
when a jw is asked a question and they know to answer will make the Society look bad it is indeed an amazing thing to watch as the GLAZE goes over their eyes-
to watch the wheels of thier mind spin as they contemplate what it will say about the org to agree with you and then to watch them go into Mental Gymnastic" trying to explain something that they know is wrong or foolish
like I always say the wt has some Goofy rules that the avg jw is always being called on to defend
For those who want conclusive proof, the law society of Ontario will post the judges decision on its web site. I'm not sure how long this takes. Any member of the public can access it. This is a verbatim copy of the decision from a source that is objective and credible.
As for the fallout, I see that once again the society is shooting itself in the foot. Their high-handed and hypocritical actions in this case are so reprehensible that many persons will see the light about them. Some active Witnesses will get fed up and leave, some will have their eyes opened that initial crack and will leave later, and some members of the public will not open the door next time.
Overall, the money that they won (which will probably never be collected in full) will be more than offset by the money that they lose from these absent members.

Thus the reason for this part in the Press Release
People don?t donate money to the Witnesses so they can turn around and attack, retaliate and intimidate survivors of childhood sexual abuse inside the court system."
- a not so sutle suggestion about how people can show their distain for the Borg:

Please post this as soon as it's available. I'd surely like to put to rest the credibility of the information of the Soceity's actions on this matter.
So newspaper articles aren't enough? Blind and foolish...I feel sorry for them, but then again, most JWs claim they are smart, educated, whatever...If they can't see the smoking guns, news articles, damaged people, examples of other churches failing to protect the innocents, on and on. They either need a good kick in the ass, or like others have said, something much more personal to happen to them. So be it.
You go girl. With any luck, your friend will see your seed you planted, and she will start to water it her self, without you reminding her to do it.In time her garden will be weedless.Keep up your planting.
I used the same arguments with my brother-in-law, but the only response I got was that it was all lies. "What about the court documents? The newspaper articles? " I asked. "All lies. This system is controlled by the debil who is trying to destroy jehovers earthly organization..."
