WATCHTOWER WORDS

I remember the term "rendezvouz." My mom hated it. My dad was not a JW and a little paranoid. Imagine telling him that she was going to a rendezvous? It sounded like an assignation. That arrangement lasted barely a year.

It is one of gnat things the WTS was fond of stressing and ignoring the camel things such as JWs "placing" magazines they hadn't read themselves.

    rendezvous [obs]
A prearranged meeting place. The term formerly designated a place to meet for field service. The word is taken directly from the French language and is pronounced RON-day-voo. <<This week the rendezvous will be at the book study location.>>

STORY: The reason for discontinuing the use of this term is probably because of its similarity to tryst, i.e., an agreement between lovers to meet. [164] One sister's unbelieving husband was upset whenever she told him she was headed off to a rendezvous, until he realized she didn't mean she was two-timing him.

    Kyria,

In Russia, Pioneers were a Communist youth organization. Now that must have been confusing to the public, although not amusing.

    I call it "Watchtowerese"

I told a recently appointed elder that he was getting ridiculous with all his Watchtowerese. He told me he was proud to speak the pure language.

I've scanned a lot of Watchtower liturature into my computer, and If I try to run a spelling/grammer check on it the computer doesn't like it..... My dad asked me to help him scan the new study book into the computer to help some short sighted people in his hall, and we had quite a discussion about this and why the watchtower uses the language it does.

I think the best one is "fleshly" brother or "fleshly" sister.

OMG, When I first heard that, I couldn't believe it! Sounds so weird, and cultish!

    Shamus,

Not sure if it's been mentioned, and it's not strictly a WT word, but the overuse of 'meaningful' gets me.

A meaningful personal study routine, a meaningful answer, a meaningful share in the ministry etc.

Also, while I'm thinking about it, 'personal study'. If I say this to a non-JW, they think I'm studying for college or something. But to a JW, it means sitting at a desk surrounded by WT literature. I used to get so worked up because my personal study is always hit-and-miss and everyone in my KH is so spiritual.

"Independent Thinker" ..........ultimate oxymoron when compared to what *worldly people* would think it means.

If you tell a worldly person...."You're really an independent thinker, aren't you?" They would say "Why, yes I am. Thanks for noticing."

If you tell a JW the same thing.......they would say "I AM NOT!!!!!!!!" Knowing that you've just insulted them & their spirituality!

Btw - to be an independent thinking jw's means that you're *pushing ahead* of the organization, most likely having a *stiff neck* and to be viewed as *spiritually weak*, maybe even necessarily *privately marked*.

As one elder actually told me about Maximus (who used to post here) and Max was NOT df'd, "Why, we just assumed he was disfellowshipped. He was always an Independent Thinker. (Even though at different times, he was a Pioneer, Elder, CO, DO). Just too smart to stay One Of God's TRUE People."

I'm borrowing the above picture from SanFranciscoJim (on a current thread about Smurfs).

This was a True Horror for some jw's around here. Seemed the sisters talked about it more than brothers, however. Ignorant sisters.

Also, Proctor & Gamble. Satanic (but other fundamentalist followers believed that also).

    "Sheep" - victim.

    "Other Sheep" - second-class victim.

I have saved Farkel's wonderful piece to really delve into later, but the above was just too precious.
