If this is the case, given our history of installing shahs, discriminating and mistreating their innocent nationals in our borders (which used to gaurantee all basic human freedoms before Ayatollah Ashcroft turned Gitmo into a Mob boss basement), bombing their cities with only the scantest of spurious evidence, ripping off thier lone ratural resource at the insistence of PNAC...I can't say I don't understand why they're siding with the terrorists...
Of course, If these same people have lived in the South 140 years ago, we'd be waving their flags today.
We also allow sleeper terrorist cells to operate in this country in Michigan, Montana and Colorado...but they're all white folks, so it's OK...all they blew up was a federal building in Okla. City.
Why didn't the Americans focus the military resources we're lavishing on Iraq first on Bin-Laden and Al Qaeda, all the while maintaining a watchful eye on Iraq? The result:no Bin-Laden, no Saddam, no WMD a far-from-finished mission in Afghanistan and a lot of thrashing about, fumbling and body bags coming home thanks to feckless U.S. who planners bungled their post-war/postSaddam Iraq forecast.
Well I'm convinced.
That post was a homerun.
Badger,

Great point also.
We as Americans need to be honest with ourselves. This war could be rationalized, after the fact, for a variety of reasons, many of which have been discussed here.
But was Iraq the kind of threat to the US that called for a full blown invasion and a declaration of war? So far the facts do not bear that out.
There are obviously bigger threats to us than Iraq, and we don't even go after them. Realisticly dozens of nations pose a threat to the US. But how great of a threat?
Enough with the A Q links, that would mean we would hit a dozen more countries
To take Badgers point a step further, up until 9/11, the greatest terrorist attack on US soil was perpetrated by a former US soldier, Tim McVeigh.
So do we bomb the US army?
? Do we bomb ourselves?
We don't declare war on nations because of the weak- ass links that we have found so far. If we did Saudi Arabia would be dust.
This brings us back to

This is the root of the problem, either;
1/ The US government were incompetant in assessing the risk that Iraq represented to the outside world.
... or ...
2/ The US government lied about the risk that Iraq represented to the outside world
Truthully I'm not sure yet, I'm going to give it a little more time. But I'm thinking it is a combination of both.

And as for what Bushy said;
Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised. ? Address to the Nation, March 17, 2003
... that was then, and this was, well, a few days ago;

Lies or incompetance... a simple choice but not a happifying one.
Last call,
George W. Bush:"The regime has a history of reckless aggression in the Middle East. It has a deep hatred of America and our friends. And it has aided, trained and harbored terrorists, including operatives of al Qaeda. "
The above statement is entirely true...but not once did the administration try to make the connection between 9-11 and Iraq, in fact they went to pains to avoid this...yet now it would seem, at least to some, that there is a link between Iraq and 9-11...but no proof is enough for those who hate George Bush and want the US to dance at the end of the UN dangled strings.

We've discriminated against foriegn nationals? No, we've enforced the law. We've bombed military targets in Afghanistan and Iraq with some civilian casualties as a result...the evidence was far from "spurious". We've ripped off their natural resources???? BS we've paid good solid US dollars for their oil at the prices they've set.
As to your last statement...you imply a racist overtone to this whole thing...which is BS. There are plenty of White Supremicists in jail...though I wouldn't be oppossed to sending them to GTMO as terrorists.
Yer, now to the home front.You said, "We've ripped off their natural resources??? BS we've paid good solid US dollar for their oil at the prices they've set."
I would love to hear your 'justification' of what and why the Euro-Americans, raped, pillaged and kill Native American Indians. What good solid US dollar did they pay for what they presently have?

Yeru;
You are unAMerican!
You disagree with the White House sitter; it says he "believes the former Iraqi president had ties to al-Qaeda".
You seem to think there is PROOF.
... there isn't, there are BELIEFS.
Beliefs fellow soldiers of yours have died for.... but no proof.
... anyway, you better report yourself for unAMerican activities or start BELIEVING... there may still be time to ave you!
SJ,
What happened to the Native Americans was horrible...I guess first you must ask this same question of the Spanish, English, Dutch, etc who colonized this continent. We learned it from our European forebearers.
On the other hand, it's terribly unfair to judge our forefathers actions by todays standards.
Abaddon,
I guess we need to define "Proof", there are differing interpretation of facts...
