South Park and the Irrelevance of Doctrine

I occasionally watch "South Park" - which for you outside the US, is a cartoon which brazenly satirizes everything

using foul-mouthed grade school kids as characters. It's really amazing what the censors let them get away with.

Anyhow, a recent episode took direct aim at historical claims of the Mormon Church. They portrayed Joseph Smith

as a con-artist who impressed simple minded rubes in the 19th century. The singing of "dumb, dumb, dumb"

could be heard in the background along with comments about ancient people being punished by God who gave them

    dark skins!

At the end, the young Mormon kid being lambasted remarked that he didn't care if all of it was bogus

because he had a nice family and a nice way of life and "you can [ insert off color reply here]".

This explains a lot about the "truth" as well. Compliance ain't faith - and lots of Witnesses are just going along

with whatever gets them by. Elders express astonishment when young pioneers achieve their promised hours

on field service reports but secretly spend afternoons fornicating or smoking weed.

This also explains a lot of otherwise intelligent elders I know - who read books on UFOs , ghosts,

ESP, and other heretical topics. When I asked one of them about how these were consistent with the

"truth", the reply I got was "It's a good life". I have also known some "higher ups" in the organization ,

who secretly think most Watchtower doctrine is nonsense - but go along anyway.

Organizational structure is vastly more important than any doctrine. This is why a feeble old

man wearing a funny hat can command attention from people taught to think that crackers

magically transform into a Messiah's bodily tissue in their tummys. Some people laughed

at Hare Krishnas for having a top knot of hair, so God could get a good grip whisking them

away. In religion, wackiness is just a matter of personal taste.

An appropriate description of the "Church of Unity at Any Cost"; that is the impression I get of the WTBTS. They are reaping what was sown.

BTW, I am at a loss to see how it can be described as a "good life".

I love South Park and those nasty kids. I wonder what it would take for the creators to do a JW show?

THAT would be something to see.

    I agree darkuncle.

I would love to see a South Park of JWs. <giggling hysterically>

Cartman: "That's my @#$! Watchtower, give it back. I've got it all underlined"

A good life is an illusion to anyone living under religious rules. Like JT says, the WT is selling timeshares to week 53. Enjoy.

"Even if the new system never comes, I'll still be a JW because this is the best way of life" was a sentiment I heard from some of the "friends" while I was a JW. I couldn't fathom that, I thought "you enjoy this misery?"

I got turned on to South Park only a few months ago, it would have been way outside of my box when I was a JW. I did know a few fringe JW's who watched it, I wish more would as shows like SP are great for shaking up a self-righteous mind.

There was an episode where a bunch of people died and went to Hell, and Satan got up on a platform in front of them and they were complaining saying that they shouldn't be there, "I was a devout Catholic" and "I was a practicing Jehovah's Witness."

And Satan says, "SOrry, I'm afraid you were all wrong. Let me see, the right religion was... the MORMONS, yes the mormon religion was correct."

But it turned out that Heaven was full of Mormons and it sucked to be there so bad that they sent Saddam Hussein to Heaven and he was screaming and struggling to get away, but the Mormons dragged him away to watch a play about how alcohol ruins families, and then to play charades. It was funny.

Plus, Orgazmo was about a Mormon.

I think programmes like south park are brilliant, they really make you think about things, and your attitude towards them. So, how many of you watched south park when you were witnesses? I remember being at someones house and they put it on. It was the very first series and it had just been released in the UK. We loved it, and we were all in 'good standing' at the time. So how many watched it wehen still witnesses? And what did you think the first time you saw it, and the movie!

edited because of a fraudian slip........
