Gosh! My religion doesn't believe in a personified "bad god" so I guess it ain't necessarily true that God needs the Devil to continue to dominate the theological scene.

En fait, je suis déjà inscrit sur JWD depuis quelques mois, mais je participe peu. Raison : j'ai un site consacré aux TJ et un forum qui me prennent pas mal de temps.
Je suis Belge (ce n'est pas de ma faute) et le français est ma langue maternelle.
Je comprends très bien l'anglais, mais je n'ai pas toujours facile non plus de m'exprimer dans cette langue. Avec "Celia" qui écrit principalement (je crois) dans la section "Friends", mon épouse et moi avons participé à la traduction française du livre "Crisis of Conscience" de Ray Franz. Nous cherchons une maison d'édition. Nous espérons qu'il paraîtra bientôt.

PS : Mon pseudo "motema bolingo" te surprendra peut-être. J'ai de grandes attaches sur le continent noir et "motema bolingo" est mon "totem" dans la communauté africaine que je fréquente. C'est du Lingala et signifie "coeur amour" ... c'est pas beau ça ?

Tu rigoles ou quoi ! J'adore les Belges j'ai vecu à MEULEBEKE la moitié de mon enfance !!! le plate vlams est sans doute my premiere langue vraiment parlée (j'ai oublié remarques ... mais la dernière fois que j'y suis retournée au bout de quelques jours des brides de langue me revenait par blocs il y avait des trucs que je comprenais et que je pouvais exprimer enfin à nouveau et d'autres pas du tout !!!

Actually, it does. Dialectics is a false idea (a "stupid belief" to quote some of the illustrious posters on this board). It was an attempt to make an empirical science out of the chaotic elements of social change provoked by the Industrial Revolution. You might as well use the phlogiston theory when you are trying to build a nuclear reactor.
As for the topic of the thread: I believe in the Devil. Not as expressed by the Christians, but definitely I believe that some of the more inhuman aspects of our history were motivated by the kind of arrogance and callousness that is the hallmark of tyranny. There is so much good in the world that seems to have an outside, or higher source or model from which it draws its impetus. I would be willing to conjecture that there is a personality motivating the evil we see as well. I mean, who comes up with the idea to industrialize murder? And there are people on the fringes of society that seem to have ideas (Dahmer, and the German cannibal, spring to mind) that completely shock and appall just about everybody that sees them. Where do such ideas come from, so counter to everything that we commonly think of as desirable? I would say that a personality that viewed us as less than valuable, viewed our pain with amusement, was toying with our sick - could provide a plausible explanation.
Of course, people can be bastards all on their own. It takes two to tango, and the ones who act on such horrible ideas are just as culpable as the one who inspires them. Interestingly, many of the perpetrators of these horrible deeds believe in the Devil, and believe they are working for him.
How important is he? I think he is unnatural, and a distraction. When he is done away with, then we can get on with things in a proper fashion. More emphasis on the good and charity inherent to the human frame would solve a LOT of the problems on the earth.
I find it interesting that when certain people get rid of the idea of a supernatural Devil, they tend to create one ("A conspiracy of bankers" or "the Illuminati"). They have a need to explain the apparent malevolent intelligence behind a lot of human suffering, and the apparent inability of good people to help those in need.

I personally do believe in the Devil as proclaimed by Christianity (the Catholic variety). Does God NEED the devil...not by any means...Humans are weak enough to jack up God's plans without needing the personification of evil.
