They didn't believe in Accupuncture, either, until it was later scientifically proven.

For me, when I had my piercings, some were OK, some were not.

Oh the stuff I had said to me as a result of one bad piercing.

Actually, the piercing was done entirely right, but my body rejected the metal (stainless steel).

I had ear piercings, but grew tired of them. They were fine, but I removed them.

My Valis piercing, eventually worked its way out. It was NOT infected, contaminated etc., it was simply my body's own rejection to the object.

But for some, depending upon their interpretation of 'energies' and such, perhaps.....a piercing may (?) influence their body and their performance. I don't know, I can merely accept someones word for it.

    Interesting post.

Touche! Yes, I have heard that acupuncture has been scientifically proven to work as a form of pain control. I have not seen a specific study, but I'm confident that it was not because it was discovered to unblock chi.

This is an example of something that was once labeled a pseudo-science but was later discovered to actually work (at least the pain control aspect of acupuncture, anyway). However, that doesn't mean all "pseudo-sciences" will have the same fate. Many alternative medical treatments show no difference from placebo when they are put to a controlled test.

The only evidence seems to be testimonials or anecdotes. These may sound convincing, but science has learned that you can't trust this type of evidence. Controlled double-blind tests are the way to prove if something works or not. If some of these alternative medical treatments are as effective as people claim, then why don't they prove their effectiveness in controlled tests?

If these practices are ever proven to have real effects, then I'll be all for it! Until then I will remain a skeptic.

Well, since Doc isn't a marathon runner with a pierced naval, we can't do a JWD study of our own. Rats.

I didn't expect everyone to believe it, don't even care. Just thought it was an interesting point of view worth trying.

BTW six, my knee hurt because I was compensating for some fascial pain in my other leg. Duh. That and the fact that 26 miles is too damn far to run.

Not sure if I'm going to run more marathons. Probably. I really like to run half marathons though. The training is shorter and easier and I don't feel so beat up all the time. I'll let you know for sure after I've run this one!
