US, UK poles apart over breasts

My daughter (8 years old) saw Janet's breast when she was watching the SuperBowl with her dad. Didn't appear to faze her a bit, but then we didn't make a fuss about it. She thought it was stupid. I imagine a 13 year old boy might have reacted a bit differently, but ultimately your kids take their cues from you the parent.

Personally I would rather take responsiblity for what my child watches than have a group of people censor things for me....but then I'm just a rebel

I don't know about you, but when I was a small kid I didn't enjoy seeing that kind of thing.I wanted to be kid and I didn't want adults shoving adult things down my throat. That is what people are upset about. Keep adult matters where they belong.

I agree, Heather. I am not a mother, but, I like how you brought it back to what we as children felt when we were subjected to "adult" things..............I remember when adults would drone on over coffee and cigarettes, or playing cards, or whatever activity brought them together.........and even as a kid, I felt like I shouldn't be listening to certain things..........like mom used to say, (she was always careful) "little pictures have big ears" and I add bigger imaginations! As kids we kept our innocence for such a short time............I understand how you feel............you want to give today's kids more time to have that! And, of course, alot of us know what a stolen childhood feels like...............

Thank you, Terri. I suspect maybe adults who think this was just fine as entertainment for kids, weren't robbed of their innocence as young children.

How can you censor something that is happening live that you don't expect? When you are watching a ballgame on TV, you generally think it's safe to leave your children watching the half time show while you go to the kitchen. Okay, it happened and you handled it. But would you choose for your eight year old to sit and watch people simulating sex and tearing each other's clothes off?

I don't think what Janet and Jason did was the crime of the century or anything like that. I do think they need to know it was inappropriate and not appreciated by many of the Superbowl viewers. No one is asking for them to be boiled in oil. They weren't even arrested for the spectacle. Just keep adult themes where they belong. Cherish the innocence of children.

I don't think that the bare breast was the totality or single cause of the negative reaction by many viewers.

Many people feel that there is a gradual slide in the direction of imorality, taking place in this nation and that the media is a major cause.

Add to the boob flash ,the dry f--ing dance that they engaged in and the family relationship of the boob to the Jackson family and the ongoing mess with Michael Jackson and the current elevated concerns about child molestations, I think that the public reached a critical mass and went BOOM!

This happening on a sports event and many families with children saw this and it was too much.

Did anyone watch the Grammy's? I saw some clips.

Breasts hangin' out everywhere - everything BUT the nip. Talk about yer double standard.

If anything, the violent way it was portrayed 'n sync with the song lyric shoud be what is shocking.

I would imagine you censor it when you see the humping, bumping and grinding onstage beginning....I wasn't with my daughter when she saw it....and her dad tends to let her watch things I wouldn't *shrug* I have learned to deal with it.

My take is the bigger fuss you make about it the more kids wonder what the heck is up. If you just let it slide off like water on a ducks back, they don't even notice it.

I cannot believe America has been so up in arms about seeing half a tit. You are fine about bombing the crap out of half the world and letting your kids see Rambo or Zombie flesh eaters and get all prudish when a girl show's her breast.

    Unbelievable. Get a life!

America is about choice, while most other nations are use to having things force feed to them. If you chose to let your kids watch Rambo or Zombie flesh eaters, fine, that's your choice. Cable tv is full of it and I know plenty of parents who allow their kids to see whatever they want. On the other hand, I know plenty of other parents who don't let their kids what that kind of stuff. What the uproar is about is not being given the choice. When people are watching the Super Bowl on "public" tv during prime tv, you don't expect to see nudity. That "choice" is taken away when someone, such as Janet Jackson, decides that she's going to break the rules. Personally, there are more dangerous things that face my 13-year old son but I do feel a bit pissed that I now have to wonder what's going to happen during the next Super Bowl half time show.

I don't care if her breasts were revealed or not.. I don't have a problem with breasts.. I've seen women's breasts.. happen to have a pair of my own.. I even have some pictures.. (well we won't go there)..

but the point is this happened on a television broadcast where rules are in place. The FCC absolutely forbids what happened there. Families with children know that when they watch a public television show what the content framework is. Even a television show that has some sexual content / and or violence will bring up a warning first so that if families do not want their children exposed to this, they can change the channel.

But this prank didn't give anyone a choice..

Like I said.. it isn't a big deal to me.. My baby is 19 and if my boys saw the superbowl.. I am pretty sure they enjoyed what they saw..

but I do relate to how people with young children might feel.

As John Cleese once said in a Monty Python show - I love tits - and intercourse is a lovely woody word

    I'm blaming the Brits.

Simon, you said it was rather "Puritanical" and Badger agreed. You Brits sent us you Cromwell rejects and now laugh at us for being screwed up. You could have at least just dumped your criminals on us like you did Australia. Then we would be normal by now. But instead you dumped your religious fanatics.

Calvinist, Fundamentalist, evangelicals, whatever they call themselves they not much different then the JW's, cast from the same mold.

So don't scoff at your nipple-challenged colonist. Its more your fault than ours.
