Ok I'm fornicating.....but an Apostofest? Nah that would be pushing it toooooooo far!

You haven't been to an Apostafest in Texas. The last one we had a transvestite, all 6'4", and while everyone else was merrymaking, arrowstar and I were doing tequila shots at the bar.

And who says Texas is conservative?

    1. At home and annoyed because the news coverage bumped the movie that was scheduled to come on 2. At school. Someone came up to me at the locker and told me. I wasn't really all that aware of the scope of things nor did I have a vivid picture of just how big (and what) the WTC was. We watched news coverage all day in classes and some of us saw the second one hit live (I didn't, math test).

    3. Not alive.

    1. In bed fast asleep, but then the telephone ringing woke me up startled. for some reason the very first thought that popped into my head was "oh my god she's dead!" I had no idea what had happened. my mother answered the phone and it was my sister. she confirmed that Diana was dead.

    2. watching the whole thing from the Brooklyn Heights promenade. actually I heard the report first on the radio but I couldn't believe a word of it. then I went up with the crowd to the promenade and got there just in time to see the first tower topple over. It was one hell of a day. me, a co-worker and a throng of people trying to get into Manhattan. the streets lined with people giving out water. people covered in gray dust. churches and restaurants opening their doors to let people use the restrooms and whatever working telephones there were. watching police cars, fire trucks and FBI vans fly by us. one of those cars stopped and the man asked me how to get down there. I told him "keep going straight and follow the smoke." it was all so unfrigging real.

    3. I hadn't been born yet for JFK and RFK assassinations.

    1. Diana: Sitting and listening to some nice, relaxing classical music late at night, when the news came on and announced her death I shot out of my chair and yelled "WHAT?!?"--it was the first I'd heard that she had been in an accident, so I didn't have any time to prepare. It took me awhile to find another station to verify the news. Her death eclipsed Mother Theresa's, who died just a week or so later.

    2. 9-11: Already answered this one on another thread, but I was watching the TV by the time the second building crashed. I just fell on my knees, in shock. I could not cry, it was shocking and surreal.

    3. I remember Bobbi Kennedy being assassinated. My parents got the newspaper with the headlines, and my dad yelled--they were extremely upset. I was only 6. I didn't know that his brother, JFK, had been assassinated (just 3 months after I was born).

    4. The Challenger: I was in Japan, walking into a classroom to takeover for another English teacher. She said, "THE CHALLENGER BLEW UP". I watched the news all day after that; it was surreal as well.

    1. I think I heard it first from the morning news. So I probably was having my breakfast.

    2. I was about to have breakfast, and my boyfriend called. I didn't believe him, but when I turned on the TV, I couldn't believe it. It also brought my memory of a Korean Airline case. It was shot down by then Soviet airforce. Over 200 people died, and they (Soviet) never appologized. I remembered the scenes from the public memorial service. It was so sad. All those grieving family members were so similar to the ones at the WTC.

I remember that night (August 30, 1997) the car accident involving princess Diana. I was at a local watering hole here in Toronto, and the waiter pointed to the TV screen to say that 'Lady Di' was in a really bad car accident in Paris. I know it was a Saturday night here in Toronto. It was sort of unbelievable at first.

September 11, 2001. I was sleeping. I was doing publicity for a westcoast punk band, and well...up all night, sending out e-mails/faxes and press kits etc., and well...it wasn't until I woke up, and listened to my call-answer messages that I realized, that there's all this 'World Trade Centre' stuff. But my best friend in Cleveland, Ohio, called me and asked me to call him right away. Which he wouldn't do unless it was important. So I call him, and he asks me if I have heard anything. The TV is on in the other room, but I hadn't made my coffee yet, and I was already wanting to get things ready for the day (more publicity work). When I did call my friend in Ohio, he told me what happened. I didn't believe a word he said. But somehow he coaxed me into going into the other room, phone dangling in mid-air stretched as far as it could go: and then I watched video feed, and then I noticed...something was wrong. Very wrong. But when I told him I needed to watch this, I hung up the phone, grabbed my coffee and then watched the news. When I saw the actual replay of one of the towers collapsing, I 'yelled' because it was just too unbelievable.

JFK (November 22, 1963): I was apparently, playing on the kitchen floor as a baby in southwestern Ontario, and my mother was cleaning the floor, and she heard it on the radio.

Man on the Moon (July 1969). Yes I remember that, I was about 7 years old, and I remember at night, looking up at the moon, trying to 'find' the astronauts. Funny what a kid thinks, eh?

    1. I don't know where or what I was doing - but remember thinking "She was an 'inconvenient woman'. How sad that they killed someone who was doing so much good."

    2. I was watching Canada AM and saw the whole thing live - a wave of grief and sadness overwhelmed me. It reminded me of what Obiwan said in Star Trek when the home planet was wiped out "a disturbance in the force" of millions dying, crying out in pain.

As for the others, I have to say that the murder of Dr. ML King, Jr. was the one which affected me. I was only a child (7 or 8) but it had a great affect on me, and I still feel much sadness any time I think of this great man (imho the greatest American hero) being shot down by a cowardly sniper.

    1. In bed dozing to the morning news. Thought I'd maybe dreamt it.

    2. Washing the dishes when there was a news flash on the radio about a plane crash in NY. Turned on the tv in time to witness the second plane hit. Felt guilty being so transfixed and wanting to see as much footage from as many angles as possible.

9/11: I was in bed and my husband called me from the driveway on his cell phone and said a plane just hit the world trade center. I turned on CNN, and immediately thought: "Osama." I have always been fascinated with Middle Eastern affairs, and had just been reading alot of information on Osama the previous week. Ugh! My friend and I sat in front of the television for two days.
