Not even the Jews themselves viewed the terms used in the same way the JW's do. The Psalms mention ruling over the wicked while in the grave...Samuel is called from the grave...still conscience...and Jesus showed what Contemporary (to his day) thought on death was in the story of Lazarus and the rich man....not to mention that Peter talks about Jesus preaching to the Dead and freeing them
