Also one thing I have found throughout art history is that money fuels art..patronage is and will always be an important factor in how many pieces and what quality those pieces achieve in the beholder's eye. I haven't gone and may wait till May when all the friends are in town.

Valis this doesn't surprise me, almost everything is driven by money. So after viewing pictures of Piscasso and Jackson Pollack's "art" I can only conclude there are a lot of very rich idiot art patrons out there.

Modern art is what happens when painters stop looking at girls and persuade themselves that they have a better idea.
    John Ciardi

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.
    Aristotle

The history of modern art is also the history of the progressive loss of art's audience. Art has increasingly become the concern of the artist and the bafflement of the public.
    Paul Gauguin

Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgments. An artist recreates those aspects of reality which represent his fundamental view of man's nature.
    Marcel Proust

Great quotes to contemplate, Phantom. Here are some more to ponder when it comes to the meaning of art, or if it should mean anything at all:

"The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery." ~ Francis Bacon

"The function of Art is to disturb. Science reassures." ~ George Braque

"A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art." ~ Paul Cézanne

"To become truly immortal, a work of art must escape all human limits: logic and commonsense will only interfere. But once these barriers are broken, it will enter the realms of childhood visions and dreams." ~ Giorgio DeChirico

"Painting is easy for those that do not know how, but very difficult for
    those that do!"
    ~ Edgar Degas

"To create one's own world in any of the arts takes courage." ~ Georgia O'Keeffe

"Art teaches nothing, except the significance of life." ~ Henry Miller

What would the world, and life be without art in all forms produced by artists brave enough to listen to no one but themselves? ~ bisous (kimberlee)

hmm...maybe I should clarify...even if you don't like the art, many artists don't have the money to work w/many mediums. People who pay/fund artists perpetuate creativity regardless of whether you like it or not.

If you dont get picasso then give Salvador Dali a try. His stuff is the most deranged art I have ever looked upon.

"... almost everything is driven by money"?

    Really? Do you mean that?

When ingo swaan was trying to break into the new york art market (in the 70's, i believe), he found it impossible, even though he was told by the pros that his stuff was good. He found out that it was only open to marxists and their sympathisers. I don't know about your city, but it wouldn't surprise me if social engineers have grabbed the whole field. Art is a powerful force, working on the conscious and subconscious levels.

Elsewhere: Thunder feels the same way LOL One of our friends has his Masters in Art History and is really good at what he knows they discuss art all the time.

When I went to the art gallery with Thunder I had to keep from laughing loud cause he was saying the most hilarious crap

Myself as an artist I prefer a more realist perspective as for what I think about other work I understand what they say the works are but I don't always agree
