We recently had to send our cat we had for some ten years "over the rainbow bridge", due to a probable brain tumor. So I know what your feeling right now, and it is not a pleasant feeling. Mrs Bug and I wish you and your family the best. Bug
Now it's my DOG too!

What a heart wrenching thread....It is just as painful to loose our pets, as our loved ones...They touch us all in some way, shape or form and become our loved ones as well...We lost our shepherd 4 years ago, and I still think about him all the time..(I think what bothered us the most was, he never died peacefully..at least you will have that special time to spend with him)....with time, everything sees to get easyer at some point...Not many words are going to make this better for you or your family Nina, but rest assure, we are all thinking about you at this time.....May peace be with you and give you strength to carry on.......
Can I share with you a little something that you may like to think about...
You may very shortly would like to take your Dextors paw print and make an impression of them in his favorite spot outside....Do it outside in some common mixen cement where his favorite spot is outside in the laneway.....When your doggie crosses that "Rainbow Bridge", you will always have your dogs paw prints in the laneway.....I found this worked so well for children grieving....WHen the kids felt like they missed our dog at any time, they went outside to his favorite spot in the laneway, and sat their with his paw prints..( they use to get a few markers out as well, and Brutus had coloured paws every spring)..a little memorable for the children and yourself for that matter....I was glad that we had done it cause like I said, we lost our Brutus very suddenly and we had his paw prints to fall back on....Take care Nina..

Morty, that is a GREAT idea! I think I will get one of those stepping-stone kits and do his pawprints. Thanks for the suggestion. And thanks for all your good wishes -- it's been a helluva week, and tomorrow I get to go to an orthopedic surgeon regarding my neck and back problems. I'm almost afraid to go after everything that's happened! I can just see me exiting the doctor's office in a full body cast or some such nonsense.
Dexter is much more comfortable this morning. The vet gave him a whopper shot of steroids last night and he'll be on steroids and antibiotics for the next couple of weeks. He always seems to respond to the antibiotics and his tail and head were up this morning, tail wagging as usual. I don't think I've ever met a dog whose tail wags more than Dexter, and I am comforted by the thought that he's had a really good life -- people who love him, plenty of food and water, and a cake donut every Saturday morning since he was 11 weeks old. All you have to do is ask "Dexter, do you want a donut?" and he licks his lips and wags his tail madly. In fact, on Saturday mornings he'll sit outside our bedroom door and smack his lips starting at about 6:30 until I get up and go for the donuts.
You're right that this might be a good thing for the children to go through losing Dexter and Grandma at the same time. Unlike Grandpa, we have the opportunity to say good-bye properly, and I think that will bring closure on both fronts. And I'm glad we have Ladybug (or, as Valis likes to call her, "catfish bait") because then the house won't be completely empty after he's gone.
Well, today at least will be a fun day. I'm going to take Jennie, Jackson, and one of Jackson's friends and his 15-year-old sister to downtown Dallas on the train (we haven't ridden it before, so that's an adventure in itself), have lunch with Big Tex and then go to the Dallas World Aquarium. The kids and I have been looking forward to it for weeks -- I wanted to do one really fun thing on their spring break since we couldn't go out of town.
Love you all!

I'm so sorry for what you're going through, it's never an easy decision when to put a pet down. I've been down this road many times, but only once when I almost wanted to die, too. You are in my thoughts.
Love, kat

Nina and family...I'm so sorry for everything you're going through. Pets are family too. We recently lost our beloved horse of 23 years from colic. I cried like a baby and even had to take time off from work I feel for you
