You know, the earth is overpopulated...
There's a good chance I will never have children

Finally you said something with which I disagree. I don't think the earth is overpopulated. I DO think that our resources are poorly allocated, and parts of the earth are incredibly overcrowded ... but spread the people out & make sure that everyone has enough food & adequate shelter ... there's still room.
If you know that your ambitions are focused more on career & other things, then more power to you. It's a valid reason to not have kids.

Selfish? Perhaps.
I don't think it's selfish at all. Not everyone wants a family life with children. Some are bad at it which makes everyones life miserable. How many men were good men in many other ways.......but really sucked at being a dad? Perhaps the dad never wanted what he ended up with......then all suffer. Then there are those who THOUGHT they never wanted kids....and when they had them....their life was much better and they were glad they had kids. I guess it's a gamble.

Couple of comments:
Brad...based on the opinions and attitudes in your post, you don't sound like dad material (at least not now) so not having kids is a sound decision. Your views may change when you are older.
I wholeheartedly disagree that having kids/family = maturity or begin 'settled'. Thought that went out in the 60s. Having the wisdom and courage to pursue your own path in spite of societal views is reflective of maturity and independence of thought.
good luck in achieving your goals, they are worthwhile.

Gumpy,
Come to think of it, I probably would be a great father. But, I'm also a perfectionist and think "all or nothing" many times. That being said, I think declining the weighty responsibility of children might be the course of wisdom.
For me.

not to mention the fact that one has to have intercourse with a woman in order to produce a child ;).

That doesn't mean you would be a militant type dad either......demanding perfection from your kids. Do you demand perfection from your friends and family? Probably not......you deal with it though it bugs the hell out of you maybe. If you can make allowances for family and friends.....you could do it with your own children........if you made it a goal to be that way.

hi logans,
interesting to read your post, i'm around the same age as you and can totally relate to what you're saying.it's never happened to me but i've been told all of my life. 'you just gotta meet the right woman'... maybe it's true, i usually just reply with ?blah blah blah?, but i dunno, but if i have kids it will be great, but if not i don't plan on living to be very old, young and alone is cool enough, but old and alone? no thanks, i can?t be bothered with that one, you gotta think about the future, not just financially but emotional state of mind, and future regrets.
other than that my words of wisdom are... have sex with as many different girls as possible, that way you will be able to see and appreciate love when it comes... that's my philosophy anyway, and when it happens you will have be so used to having sex all the time that you will inevitably get her pregnant in no time, and then you have no choice but to have clones.
