Desi, I have done this to my hair so many times, even I am beginning to wonder if it is a form of self mutalation........hehe.
I would go to the beauty shop and have them put a pretty , as close to your natural color as possible, color on your hair. The highlights will still show up and it will look natural, with highlights and lowlights.
I swear by Pantene , smooth and silky I believe it is called,,,,,conditioner, it is in the bottle with the green writing on it anyway. Nothing you buy at the store comes close to what this does for my hair. I also use a little of the Frizz Ease and that helps my damaged already frizzy hair.
