Brits are great! I work with them everyday. I'm working on a project for BP right now. Seeing as it's the weekend I'll raise a pint for you tonight.

Lived there; loved the people. I found them to be extremely friendly; but then my dh and I were a "novelty" living there. We lived in a neighborhood where we knew everything about everyone, and we'd hang out at the pubs for some interesting conversation. In many ways I felt more comfortable there than in the US. I still watch BBC a good portion of the time.

nah, that's partly comprehensible ... nothing like yours mate !

It's funny, if you spend some time with someone with a very strong accent you get tuned into it after a bit and can understand it more.

I have a Mancunian accent (think Oasis, Take That and Simply Red). Our accents are very 'city based' and you can even tell from where in a city someone is from if you are familiar with the variations.

Strangely enough for a tiny country the British have very distinctive behavioral characteristics dependent on the area that they live in. It normally shows itself in their drinking habits.

For example, watch a Yorkshireman when it is his turn to buy a round of drinks. Inevitably he will slide off to the washroom until the empty glasses get filled by someone else. In Cornwall you enter a pub and suddenly the world stops turning and silence ensues and *everybody* turns in unison and stares at you like a village of "Midwich Cuckoos". All except for Celtic of course who continues practicing the "Riverdance" on the bar.

In Kent, people nod at you with a frown and as they walk past say "Allwight mate?" and depending in which part of Kent you are in, they may give you an affectionate punch in the face loosening most of your front teeth. The Scottish, like Little Toe, all stagger in zag-zag formation still suffering from their Noon orgy with Jonny Worker. It is amazing, even three abreast they all zig and zag in unison and at the same speed, even though they think they are walking alone.

Friday knight in Knightsbridge is the best drinking time and place in Britain, Oxford accents begin to fail after a few drinks revealing a Milwall supporter and the movie star in the wine Bar turns out to be Mavis the prostitute who has borrowed her daughters clothes.

Weirdest nation of people on earth? Undoubtedly the Danes. The place is a gigantic advertisement for psycho-therapists.
