He was asked about photos showing Iraqi prisoners naked except for hoods covering their heads, stacked in a human pyramid, one with a slur written in English on his skin. That and other scenes of humiliation have led to criminal charges against six American soldiers. Arab television stations were leading their newscasts on Friday with the photos.

"I share a deep disgust that those prisoners were treated the way they were treated," Bush said.

There currently are 138,000 U.S. troops in Iraq ( news - web sites) and 24,900 troops from coalition countries.

Bush made his comments in the White House Rose Garden after a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

I'm trying to figure out what you're implying here. Are you saying that Bush condones this behavior in private? Are you saying that Bush ordered the prisoners to be treated this way?

You know, I'm no fan of Bush, but I still don't think he's an unfeeling monster. I think anyone who tries to imply that he wasn't disturbed by the news "off the record" has the burden of proof.

As someone who personally was in Iraq and handled Enemy Prisoners of War (EPWs) I have to tell you that I believe Bush when he says what he does and that it's not just sttrictly a political maneuver. I don;t know that i trust Bush in *why* went to Iraq in the first place but that doesn't matter. Let me assure you that this is an extreme case being played out by the media. First off, I am with the Marines and this is Army, so make it perfectly clear who is at fault here. we had countless occurences of the Army's lack of professionalism in tactical situations and their own personal life. The Marines have a reputaion for strict standards and it became obvious to me why when I was in Iraq. If that was a Marine who took those pictures I can assure you he would have had the ever living crap beaten out of him. We take great pride in our community.

I saw these pictures on the internet and was pissed off myself. These may have been the worst of the Ba'ath party but the 6 Articles of the Code of Conduct and all the other regulations implemented for times of combat were implemented for a reason. I believe in them and I believe thqat moset people intend to carry them through. Please do not blame Bush, while he may be guilty of other offenses, of this one. This is a rare case I can promise you that.

i find it hard to believe that a guy who maneuvers a country into a war for more than dubious reasons with the consequence of thousands of deaths looses any sleep over this. i bet the only thing bush worries about is the effect this has on the public.
