any time you have people placing ideas above other people, you have a cult potential... but mostly when you have dominant alpha male types becoming shepherds of the sheep--- you have fleecing and slaughtering as a likely outcome.

If JWs are a cult, then every religion is. The same can be said about community organizations. They all use use some sort of 'mind-control'. Hard-core Patriotism is an example. And even discrimination.

Thank you, Joker, for your explanation.

I agree with you for the most part. All religions are cults if you go by the strict definition. Including the Catholic Church.

What makes JWs and certain other sects stand out is that they do not allow dissention on any level. To disagree or to question doctrine is paramount to "apostasy" or disobeying God. This, along with some other things, causes people to think of JWs as a "cult". Granted, by definition, that's not much of an insult, but by the common meaning by the average person, it denotes a negative connotation and is derogatory.

Since the JWs are a control group then I have to agree with those who think of the JWs as cult-like and repressive to its members.

Actually, I think he has a point. He said "Hard-core patriotism", not just, "Patriotism". There is a difference.

Yes, all groups show some tendency to sublimate the individual for sake of group goals. We have speed limits and drinking limits and laws and regulations. As a group, we have decided on a few behaviors that are "good" or "bad", and arranged appropriate rewards and punishments. I think determination of "cult-like" behavior is a matter of degrees. There are societies and groups that accommodate a high level of individualism, others allow nearly none. Since there is a direct threat to a person's well-being when somebody wishes to leave the society, I am convinced that Jehovah's Witnesses are in a cult.

Our apologist friend, spooner, if he used the orthodox definition, would be well within his rights to declare the WTS a cult.

*darn* I hate giving hints like that.

Is it a symptom of our "instant" society, that it is so much easier to *spout* than to think things through?

YES ! WE HAVE A WINNER!

Btw, thanks for the laugh, run don't walk!

True, the more I examine politics and the religious zealotry displayed there the more dismayed I am about implimenting necessary social change. The problem lays with people's lack of disciplined thinking. Far too many choices are made based upon social pressures and gut feelings. As far as religions being considered cults, I have long ago remarked that Christianity was itself by definition a cult as it was/is intolerant of other beliefs and (ostensibly)under the control of one person (or small group). Modern sects of Chritianity to the extent they imitate early Chritianity are likewise unhealthy and cultish.
