I remember reading this when I used to read the Bible, but I never understood why such a seemingly harmless act was forbidden. Anyone care to "cast some new light" on the subject?

There are two versions of this legend with very different morals and intents. 1 Chron 21 is negative and depicts David as being goaded on to take the census, (P tradition) while 2 Sam 24 has (D tradition)YHWH telling David to take the census out of disgust for the people's lack of faith in him. The numbers of men counted are also different. The two traditions P and D had separate agendas and reasons for casting David as either the flawless hero or the repentant sinner therefore each spun the legend differently.

I noticed they skipped the story where David ran for his life from Saul. Johnathan, ever loyal, begged David to reconsider. Johnathan was confident his father had not slipped so far. So they tested this out. Johnathan attempted to speak kindly of David in his father's presence, and he nearly got speared himself for his trouble.

David showed remarkable facility for self-preservation. There would have been no great hero for Israel if David passively waited to be impaled by the reigning King.

Current WT doctrine is that Solomon will be resurrected, his having paid the wage of sin death

I've become a complete atheist after 24 years as a JW and this belief really helped pave the way if the "wages" of sin is death you don't really need jesus sacrifice all you have to do is die and your sins are forgivin!

speaking of david though the whole bible is full of junk like this promises god made and didn't keep laws that only got enforced when the person in the wrong was weaker than the person doing the punishing.

I do think its funny that the wts (lower case to show no respect) keeps bringing him out most religions (remember i'm an athiest i think they are ALL wrong) seem to have learned to just talk about jesus and fluff don't go bringing up unpleasent things like... the rest of the bible!

oh well they've already started shaking in another 25 years they'll be a footnote

For example, in Moses? day, material things were needed to construct the tabernacle with all its glorious attachments and utensils. The privilege of sharing in building the tabernacle went out to all of God?s servants, and they gave according to their ability.?Ex. 35:4-24.

I think this is disgusting , how they use this scripture to enforce a belief that christians have the same responsiblity to build some monument dedicated to God . I think if we look at the churches of christiandom that we find that they use the same kind of reasoning whilst building huge churches and facilities . There doesn't seem to be any such command for the early christians in the NT .
