I remember reading this when I used to read the Bible, but I never understood why such a seemingly harmless act was forbidden. Anyone care to "cast some new light" on the subject?
There are two versions of this legend with very different morals and intents. 1 Chron 21 is negative and depicts David as being goaded on to take the census, (P tradition) while 2 Sam 24 has (D tradition)YHWH telling David to take the census out of disgust for the people's lack of faith in him. The numbers of men counted are also different. The two traditions P and D had separate agendas and reasons for casting David as either the flawless hero or the repentant sinner therefore each spun the legend differently.
