you can have your religion and even your apathy... and not be harming anyone. but when you take it to the level where you become the judge of others, based on your beliefs, then you begin to hurt other people

i would argue that apathy definitely harms.

but as far as i'm concerned, evil can't be boiled down to a product of one specific thing. i don't even think you could come up with a specific and universal definition of evil; what's considered evil varies from person to person.

True, but what a mess that makes. Hey everEbody, since I have such strong, informed opinions, why not just ask me what is evil and what is not?

Heh, good thread, as "the love of money" is most definitely not the root of all evil, though it isn't a good thing. I'd have to agree with the poster who said "fear" as being the closest to the "root". Perhaps even the love of money stems from fear of not having it. Judgementalism comes from the fear that if you don't understand it, identify with it precisely, it will hurt you. People stop looking for win/win solutions, because of the fear that a win for someone else might be a loss for them.

    And the list goes on.

    Perfect love throws fear outside.

Jealousy might be the root of all evil. Greed , for things that you don't have, as in things that are not yours to have.

Yes...jealousy, or coveting....God forgot to make that one more clear in the ten commandments.

It should have said :"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife, oil, sugar cane, land, rich farm land, gold mines, water, or any prosperity that thy neighbor may possess and you dont. Thou shalt not kill thy neighbor, even if thou covets aformentioned items."

God must be the root of all evil since he made everything in the universe.

well, things certainly are a mess, wouldn't you say ?

how do you presume we define it, then ?

I'll take it on a case by case basis. For instance, diet Pepsi is evil, but only by virtue of the existance of diet Coke. You are evil, but only because you live in California.

Six of nine comes through with some good points yet again. He and a previous poster said FEAR is the root of all evil. I would have to agree. From FEAR comes insecurity, which leads to close-mindedness, which leads to judging, which leads to condemnation, which leads to many other evils.

    Thanks for the question!!!!!

They may not actually be a "root of evil."
