FDS Sends Convention Delegates Packin'

Jehovah's Witness across North America are being sternly counseled at this week's Service Meeting that they should pack lunches during the 2004 Dictrict Convention instead of leaving the site to eat elsewere or return with food. In a letter read during the announcements, members are told this is a "serious problem". Reportedly JWs have been banned from some convention locations because the venues want concession stand business if JWs insist on bringing carry-out meals into the facility.

In an effort to make the counsel Bible-based, many scriptures are cited including Eccl 3:1 (There is a appointed time for everything) followed by the statement (verbatum): "including a time to bring your own lunch." Many in the congregation were amused at this stretch of Biblical application. Apparently, if enough scriptures are listed, the rank and file will consider it strong counsel.

Suggested bagged lunch includes: a light fare of sandwich, cookie, fruit and drink.

Apostates will be identified by bringing their prepared lunch in a MacDonalds bag.

    Get outta here!!!

I always go out and get my lunch close by. It gives me a breather from all the BS spoken all day long.

The more power dubs give to their leaders, the more power the leader will keep on taking. They are not only down to telling dubbies where to eat for lunch but WHAT to eat for lunch! Next thing you know, they will officially name the only "theocratically approved(tm)" toilet paper dubbies can use.

Wouldn't it be great if five thousand or so dubs during the "public talk" called all the local pizza delivery stores and ordered pizzas. "I'm on tier two, section b, row 17, third person from the aisle. Extra cheese on mine, please. Do you also deliver beer?"

    Farkel,

    Toooo funny.

I can just picture all those red and white shirted pizza delivery guys....parading through the stands looking for seat L33, just as the speaker is getting his spiritual high, from raising his voice in admonition!

    Laughing my arse off.

I went to the DC last year. I spent my lunches at the bar across the street. 2-3 beers and I snoozed pretty good through the afternoon sessions.

I can remember when they rationed toilet paper by having a sister hand you 3 sheets as you went to the stall.

Even in facilities that don't have food stands (assembly halls), they still caution people not to leave to eat. They have tried to "control" that by only giving people a 1-1/2 hour break. People go anyway and get back late. Oooh, they hate that.

I went to my first service meeting in about 6 months only to hear this stupid letter being read. I was so appalled by it that I had to get up and leave in the middle of it...I wanted to shout out how stupid it was. They even had the gall to use the fact that when Jesus performed his miracle to feed a crowd he only gave them fish and bread. This was to help say that we need to bring a "lite lunch." They even gave examples of the kind of food we should bring!!!! It was absurd!

Rather than just nicely ask the friends to consider it in order to help their negotiations with facilities, they try to mask it as a scriptural reason to obey them. I hate it!

1969 Watchtower article: Why Not Make It Your First Assembly?

Meals during the assembly will be no problem. At each convention location a cafeteria will be set up, providing nourishing meals at nominal cost. It is, in fact, common to see entire families eating together at the convention cafeteria. Mealtimes on such occasions are fine opportunities to make new acquaintances and hear many unique experiences
