Randy, If the Watch Tower is not taking a shot, they are certainly loading the gun.
Justin, the Second Adventists actually set 1874 as their next date for the end. When that failed, it was members of the Second Adventists who set the date 1914, not Charles Russell. See the book Three Worlds by Nelson Barbour. Russell just took Second Adventism to a different, but similar, place. The Bible Students are simply a division of Adventism and the Jehovah's Witnesses are simply a division of the Bible Student movement. They all were founded on the delusions of William Miller. GaryB
Is the Watchtower Predicting the End for 2034 AD?

Garybus,
The Seventh Day Adventists are a separate branch on the Adventist tree, and should not be confused with Second Adventists. The 1874 date is another example of a "prophetic date" which is receding into the past. It was set by Nelson Barbour, a Second Adventist. It is still held to by modern Bible Students who follow Russell's teachings, but by no means can it now be used to mark a single generation. So 1914 is fast joining the ranks of dates like 1844 and 1874.

I don't see 1914 as a date the WTS puts forth as being when Christ starting to rule in heaven, receding too soon. The WTS says that Christ came in 1919 to inspect his "temple" and found only the WTS doing the right thing (I can list 15 things they weren't doing "right") and designated them the only true religion. 1919 is anchored in 1914 so if 1914 disappears their legitimacy as the only true religion disappears.

I have to agree with blondie that the 1914 date is here to stay. Besides being so critical to their organizational legitimacy, 1914 is well remembered even by non-JWs as being the start of World War I so the JWs can tout that as being in their favor (the date at least sounds important). Of course, the War started in August and the heavens were cleansed in October which one would think would throw everything off. So, in one of the all-time greatest "Gotcha" moves by Satan, the Devil tried to distract everyone from the establishment of God's Kingdom by starting a World War a couple months before. Tricky bastard.

The Watchtower will NEVER EVER set a date again. That's one lesson they've learned. They have no reason to go out on a limb. All those people are dead. They seem to be getting by just fine with "near, imminent, soon, very soon, very very soon".
The only thing they might find tempting is a short term 3 and a half year prediction if the world actually does experience some kind of catastrophic upheaval.

I was walking home from elementary school I was in 2nd grade age 7.Directly across from Forge pond on Union street East Bridgewater Massachusetts,
When another student passed me by and told me that US president John F. Kennedy had died.I didn't believe him until I arrived home 15 minutes later and my mom was crying. I was sitting outside on the grass outside the Montreal Canada convention center, when Fred Franz released the red "Life in the freedom of the son's of God" book and he elaborated on the 1975 end of the world date,it created quite a stir. I know Because I was there! CRUEL BASTARDS How long did it take for Adam to name the animals? Remember that tid-bit? The end of the world fiasco failure of 1975 ....Sooooo, they strung us, and floated us along for another 4 years. With the intrigue of "how long it took for Adam to name the animals"? Justin, You wrote:"The Seventh Day Adventists are a separate branch on the Adventist tree, and should not be confused with Second Adventists."
I refer to Second Advent groups inclusive. Jehovah's Witnesses are actually Second Adventists. They are just two purges away from the mother group.
As far as a date marking a generation or predicting some future event, in my opinion, it's all smoke and mirrors. All a delusion can generate is more delusion. Witnessism is just a subchapter to a delusion.
This messianic madness has been going on for hundreds of years. The Jews wait for Messiah. The Christians wait to join Jesus in heaven. The Jehovah's Witnesses wait for the murderer Jehovah. All are miracles, all are interventions by a superhuman controlling force, all offer solutions to everyone's problems. All are theory. Everybody dies while waiting for the promised reward.
My money still goes on objective reality.
I was stupid when I was a Witness. I am stupid now, but not quite as stupid as I was while I was a Witness.
As far as I am concerned, end timers, water walkers, and faith healers are nut jobs and I dismiss them all. :-) GaryB
