It is common knowledge among the upper-rank that the main function of assemblies and conventions is fund raising for the WTS. As soon as they no longer server that function they will be done away with.

Pretty soon there will be "new light" and they will be getting a talk about how Jehovah has directed the Faithful And Discreet Slave to relieve the burden that the assemblies place on families

Wishful thinking... but it won't happen because then they won't be in control of people's vacation time anymore. There will never be an end to sitting in 110 degree stadiums, why, people might go to Disneyland instead and spend their money there!

Used to just love giving up one of my two weeks vacation for that.

I remember driving from Stockton to Madera for the assemblies. That's a long, boring drive!

Yes Blondie, it is an assembly hall that was built by volunteers over 20 years ago. I'm sure some was for the upkeep. I'm sure the upkeep was not $400,000 a year though. I resented hearing the accounts report saying that we had a deficit of several thousand dollars the first day with no explanation as to where the money went. When I was account servant in my local hall EVERY expense had to be read off to the congregation each month, no matter how small it was. Yet the circuits collected MUCH more money with no accounting whatsoever to the members. I get suspicious when an organization pleads for money the way they do, but refuse to give a proper accounting. It's why I never donated anything to them.

A few years back I was told they bought some very expensive lamp posts for the parking lot. They were suposedly imported from England. Quite a few JW's were upset by this waste of money. I'm sure the costs of shipping would have been huge.

Around here there was a "strong" talk about missing the Friday of the convention. Lots do not want to ask for the day off. Many JWs have jobs which require a whole week be taken off, not just a day at a time and they don't want to waste a whole week.

I was at an assembly at Vancouver British Columbia in the 1970's.They stressed how important it was to be there for every single minute of their "spiritual feast" They said if you couldn't get time off from work to go to ALL the sessions you should just quit your job. After all as we well know JEHOVAH will provide for us when we put his (read WT) interests first. I wonder how many people bought into that idea.

Only some 600 from a circuit of about 1100 were present to the dismay of the District and Circuit overseers

Next time some long-term dub tells you that only a few malcontents were expecting the end in 1975, show 'em this and ask: Can you imagine this happening in 1974?

It's good to see that some Cali witnesses will only put up with so much. California seems to dominate this board. It would seem you guys are more freethinking than the rest of us, even the JWs are rebellious.

With gasoline prices soaring in the US, driving long distances for assemblies/conventions puts a big burden on people who have: small children, fixed incomes, one income, self-owned businesses.

Any time I hear the word "simplification", I can't help but extrapolate this to mean, "cheaper".

    Examples: subscriptions, meals, etc.
