Co-worker Died

A couple of weeks ago, one of the nicest men in the world passed out at work at one of our other stores. His airway was blocked by cartilege (sp?) build-up in his trachea. Anyway, so he made arrangements to have it removed. He called me and asked if I would fill in for him at his store and I said of course, we would definately get his store covered.

He went in to the hospital, had the surgery which was 12 hours. He was in recovery for about a week and expected to come home yesterday. I have been working this week in his store and we called to check on him, he was in good spirits and doing well. Our owner and other co-workers were calling him everyday as well.

Friday night, he had a coughing spasm and ruptured something in his throat. He choked on his own blood and died on Friday night. He left 4 children behind and a wife. Two little kids....... little. Yesterday, all the men were moping, the wormen crying and it was an awful day trying to get on with the job and yet know that this was all so fleeting. The owner of the company (and this is a multi-million dollar company) showed up around 10:30 and stayed with us all day. He answered phones and talked to customers. He cried with us, he worked with us.

I couldn't even listen to the woman who was telling people that 'when it's your time to go, it's your time.' He left a handicapped older son, a 20 year old daughter in college and 2 little kids: 6 and 9. It was not his time and according to one of our customers, a surgeon, this death was completely preventable.

    I am so sorry !!!

I have seen death in family members since I was about 8...then my own mother at 14...It is a sad occasion and I agree...There is no logical reason for a family man to die....looks like he had a lot of people that depended on him. I feel so bad for his wife and kids!

It is nice to know that your boss at work that has a heart and stayed with you guys to give you support to finish the work day.

    Hugs,

What a tragedy. Unexpected deaths are the worst. I hope they investigtate the hospital.

I went into the hospital with placenta previa back in 2001, while I was there I got the worst bronchial infection. I had some of the worst coughing spasms. I wonder if he caught something from the nurses.

When I took my newborn to the pediatrician, the nurse came in to weigh him. She never washed her hands. I asked her to wash her hands because he was a preemie and we at home washed our hands regulary. The doctor came in and I asked him to wash his hands too, but he wasnt going to. I think they might have been offended but gosh they see dozens upon dozens of sick people/kids, they should wash after each one or wear gloves.

    Take care.

My condolences. It's understandable why everyone is sad. He sounds like a really good person, who uplifted everyone w whom he had dealings.

My heart goes you to the family, how tragic and sad. It brings up thoughts of a girlfriend i have , he worked for the county and would get layed off in the winter, with four small kids and a wife the money was tight,so as winter approached like he did every year he would cut trees to heat their home in a woodburner. This would be his last, a large tree that he was cutting fell on him crushing him to death. It was so unreal , his wife had no emotion for weeks ,it was like she was dreaming and would wake soon ,but it did hit and it was so heart wrenching. I am so sorry for you and his family.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, Sally. You're right, though. I don't like all that "it was their time to go" baloney, either. People just repeat it over and over, but it dosen't make anyone feel better about the death. My prayers are with you and the family.

This is sad, tragic. "Time to go" is no comfort, at least for me it's not either. It sounds like you are pulling together at work, and that's good. Your boss must be a good sort, by the sounds of it. The poor guy's family must be in shock with the rest of you.
