If this bill is passed, would it mean that the mere criticism of a lifestyle or religion, not just the advocating of violence or violent acts would be prosecuted under Canadian law?

No, it is just a refinement of the code to change the wording from "identifiable group" to include and identify a broad spectrum of what those groups may encompass.

If you click on the link jgnat provided, the change is shown. It's only one paragraph.

    1. Subsection 318(4) of the Criminal Code is replaced by the following:

    Definition of ``identifiable group''

    (4) In this section, ``identifiable group'' means any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation .

You would be shocked at the number of fringe groups that have compounds here on the East Coast. There was a court case last year, prosecuting a nun from one of these cults for child abuse ---> she had been directing the followers to beat their children (severely) for years, and was rightly sent to prison for her misdeeds after one of the ex-members turned her in.

I hate the thought of them moving their operations here. blecch!

    Hi Farkel,

I am sure you are correct. Big size brings with it a certain vulnerability. I can't help but think that the Watch Tower Publishing Corporation has some of the best management people I have seen. Not the nicest, but the best. Maybe religion brings with it so much money that it tolerates bad management but I don't think so.

The guys really running the corporations are not ignorant superstitious farm boys with an eighth grade education. They are sophisticated, educated, street wise, competent, and proactive. They are not the ignorant ungreedy people they want their unpaid workers to be.

If the Witness people behaved like the directors of the Watch Tower Publishing Corporation, they would probably not be Witnesses. They would be unethical, obsessive business people willing to lie, to compromise, to misrepresent their product, and they would try to justify, rationalize, and explain it all away. If the corporation directors were individual Witnesses in a congregation and running a secular business like the directors run the Watch Tower Corporations, the elders would disfellowship them in a week.

Since the directors own the printing presses and the real property they are worshiped and adored. Laughing as I write this:-)

Yeah. Me too. Not in a "hahahahaha" sort of way, but in a "it is so absurd and upside down in Watchtowerland" sort of way. The R&F PAY for everything the WT leaders own, and instead of the leaders being grateful, they (in effect) demand worship.

Canada has become increasingly Anti-Religion...What is the WTS thinking??

If they would trust in Jehovah and the Holy Ghost they would condemn their money and the councel of their lawyers.

But their first longing is making money from shit and growing like cancer.

the blessings from above fail, the love is dying, the chair are empty, the youth is out for fishing and the elders betreay themselves.

the fish starts stinking first by his head says the fisherman.

the ivory towers will fall like Israel fell and Judah. the apostacy has begun in their own possession.

Soon the mighty of the flock will no more rest in peace

As Gary pointed out, they just built a whole new facility at Walkill. I find it very hard to believe that they'd be closing it.

What we have is just a misunderstanding of terminology. For many years the WT operated only farm functions at the Walkill facility; then in the early 1970's the WTS started moving printing functions there and both farm and printing functions operated side by side. Slowly one by one, the WTS has eliminated the farm functions. When I was there they eliminated the chickens, shortly after that the hog production and shortly after that growing and processing vegetables/fruits in great quantities. They "outsourced" that to "worldly" sources because it was cheaper. There was a nearby secondary farm devoted to beef production that was phased out. I can see that the WTS has finally sold all the farm land that they used to support the production of farm products by Bethel staff retaining only the land, buildings and equipment needed to support the printing facilities, those already in place and the new printing facilities recently constructed.

The WTS just moved up (purchased?) new printing presses to Walkill and historically the WTS moves out the old to other branch offices.

It makes me wonder if this wasn't the plan all along. I don't know what the zoning laws are there, but having the farm may have been a means to an end - getting around zoning regulations. The JWs have interesting ways of getting around laws. One example is the Canadian Bethel in Georgetown. When they first built it they wanted to build a tunnel from the residence to the factory. The city said "NO". A short ime later they went to the city and asked if they could dig a ditch from the residence to the factory. The city said "OK". Later they asked the city if they could line their ditch with concrete. The city said "OK". A short time later they asked the city if they could cover their ditch. The city said "OK". Now they have their tunnel. They're actually proud of their tactics, and often tell people about it during the tour.
