What would they do if their "preaching work" lost money?
Don't think this is too farfetched! Take a good look at all the "adjustments" they've
already made to preserve the Watchtower "business":
No food service at assemblies
Downsizing at Bethel
Less literature being shipped to MANY congegations
Endless "reminders" to contribute
Cheaper paperback books ( Knorr hated the thought, when suggested, years ago)
Dumping a 120 tradition of mailed Watchtower subscriptions in the US
and so on.
Keep in mind that the Watchtower hierarchy has a long tradition of expecting
money to appear, almost miraculously, when they have a need. Read the Proclaimers
book about Rutherford re-starting the organization. Thus, they may feel fully
justified in shutting down congregations that fail to contribute or making any other
changes needed to stay "profitable".
Could they downsize themselves out of existence as a religion while guarding their
precious assets? When they dumped subscriptions, there were rumors that they
also cut back on Branch or Missionary home expenses - and special pioneers
in some places.
If the Watchtower's leaders lose faith in their God - THE ORGANIZATION - who knows
what they might do?

Undaunted Danny
Danny says, "A tiger can take down an elephant, if it bites it once a day."
The Jehovah's Witnesses can grandstand to the ends of the Earth, and you will still.....
GROW OLD AND DIE LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE.
The only variable here is; will you also die broken and unsaved?[Notice; All Jehovah's Witnesses who have died, are all Still Dead
Governing Body as evil rulers causing death

I think that the apartment-building project in Brooklyn Heights could not more clearly demonstrate how cynical and calculating WT leadership has become. There is no idealism left here, just a large collection of 40 and 50 something yes-men doing the dirty work to keep alive some semblance of what once was for the grumpy and hopelessly out-of-touch 70 and 80 somethings.

its 'cut and paste' guidance.
That really is funny. It stretches my ability to believe my eyes when I see how much of their literature is literally cut and pasted from previous stuff. Fred Franz must be rolling in his grave.

Intriguing, Interesting, Thought-provoking posts to this thread.
It would seem to me that the organization known as Jehovah's Witnesses is already dead.
Like a great tree that has fallen in the forest, it may take many years or decades for it to be consumed.
Since there is nothing new under the sun with this religion, and all that is left is re-hashed from bygone years, in what way does it have any life?
I find it hard to believe that this religion could ever become mainstream due to the extreme arrogance of its hierarchy and the core members.
Without the carrot at the end of the stick for the R&F of a 'paradise new order, right around the corner', and despite the explanation that 'we don't serve God for what he gives/promises us', the result will likely be mass exodus even more so than now.
No matter what my personal feelings are having been born into that religion and a part of it for most of my 30+ years, it is a very interesting one from a historical perspective.....thank you all who detailed many of these things.

On 8 th Dec 01 I posted this, to a thread of yours Metatron.

I predict that the GB will turn into the Board of Directors. The KH's will be sold as community halls or turned into bookshops. The presses will roll printing ordinary books etc. The WTBTS will turn into a company such as AMWAY with Self Employed salespeople, and inspirational books for sale to salesperons (after all, we must keep up our quota's if we are going to succeed). The Legal Dept is quite capable of setting this up when the heat gets too much, (like organised crime getting into legitamate business, starting with a huge advantage because of their cash reserves). And the dubs? Left in the cold or conned into working for the new company. Far Fetched?....Possibly. steve
Seems not so far fetched now.

Metatron:
Karl Marx predicted the danger in a communist society where the men in charge would realize the vast amount of wealth under their personal control. The Soviet Union tried to manage a gradual switch-over but it all came apart too quickly.
It is a REAL possibility (not necessarily probability) that the men at the top of the Watchtower could pick off the choisest morsels of organizational wealth. The selling of Brooklyn Hts. property should be followed closely to make sure the money is invested in the alleged dencentralizing of the printing activities of the orgnaization.
Non-profits have a way of channeling funds into life-style enhancing projects for the upper echelons.

The last couple of COs I experienced reminded me of cold hearted businessmen. They came into the congo smacked everybody on the side of the head and left. My true-self mind thought they were assholes, but my JW counterpart mind told me that they were righteous brothers dedicated to doing God's will (fortunately that JW mind is quickly fading away). I have often wondered if someday soon the Org starts to sell off some of it's investment properties (the Kingdom halls) and just leaves its members high and dry without anywhere to go. A wise investment company shifts its assets when they are no longer bringing in profit.

got my forty homey?
(Note to self)- Start scoping out prime Kingdom Hall locations to open up a chain of Curves stores!
