Jonsson will shortly publish a revised fourth edition of GTR and no doubt it will continue with similar errors and sloppy reasoning such as his already public remarks concerning Jeremiah 29: 10 on the use of the Hebrew proposition.

Jonsson is a real scholar --he does continued research and follows other published research on scrolls, archeology, language study etc. and tries to be as balanced an honest as possible. That is why he updates his work and produces newer editions as indeed has Ray Franz. Calling Jonsson sloppy is a little unprofessional of you scholar. When you do a Masters thesis , you should know that it is correct to reference as much material as possible including those references which dispute your theory. You seem a little unbalaced in your approach.

Scholar, I said: "If he (Scholar) follows his usual pattern then he will post some secular evidence for 539 BC instead."

    You replied:

I have already shown the evidence for 607 and it begins with the evidence for the Absolute Date of 539

I then said: "Or he will drone on with his "is it 586 or 587?" non-argument."

    You replied:

You try to demonstrate a simple, coherent and united presentation of all the chronological data for the confused 586 or 587.

City Fan - you were so right - Scholar just has tired , stale old arguments and nothing new to add and still not one shred of secular evidence to "prove" 607.

    BTW Scholar, this sentence:

The methodology for this calculation is simple and immediate and cannot be refuted by any scholar, critic or apostate fella.

makes me think you're just taking the p***!!!!

    apostate fella?

    Still!

You're right, the same old tired arguments. But I can't believe anyone could be that stupid. That's why I think Scholar could be taking us all for a ride! Who knows?

Thanks XQ, I love the thread.

Since the appointed uninspired Faithful and Discreet Slave, dba the Spirit Directed Organization, has admitted in print that they are guilty of eagerness, make mistakes, that they have used human speculation, made incorrect suggestions in setting dates for Armageddon, printed that Jesus himself has been directing the witnessing work on earth since 1914, but print that the Watchtower is errant and fallible and it's contents are subject to correction as understanding becomes clearer (such as the clarity following failed predictions), they just might not be seen as credible by some members.

You are right, they don't need any dates anymore, not even 1914 OR 1919. Now the Witness people are not Witnesses because they are interested in truth or even really interested in religion, they are Witnesses simply because they like the social association, the ego positions and the rote rituals and lack of need for rational thought. They are Witnesses because they like being Witnesses. First, they like it, then they explain and defend it.

When the Watch Tower Publishing Corporation realizes this they can turn the corner on donations and see revenues and assets go way up real fast. They are busy going after the nickles and dimes when they are sitting on a gold mine. In some ways they are very smart. In many other ways they are very foolish. Now their product is not religion anymore. Their product is influence. They have the influence established but they don't seem to know what to do with it. The time for scaring ignorant people into being unpaid literature distributors is well past.

I bet you'd be lucky to fine one Witness in a hundred who could tell you from memory how 607 calculates into 1914. It's just not important to them. I bet they can tell you all the congregation gossip for the last 50 years though. GaryB

Jonsson is no scholar because he has no academic qualifications and has simply rehashed the work of earlier SDA scholars on chronology. Further, his hypothesis has not been peer reviewed in scholarly journals and thus is deemed a simply piece of anti Witness propaganda. Thus far his so-called research has not been sourced by scholars working in the field of OT chronology and history and it must be stated that his view of OT chronology are not endorsed by scholars because there is no agreement concerning many of the dates for this later period of Judean history.

Originally built by Solomon in 966 B.C., the Temple at Jerusalem was destroyed four hundred years later in B.C. 586 when the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and carried the inhabitants of Judah into exile. Subsequently, during the reign of Cyrus the Persian, the Jewish captives and exiles were allowed to return to Palestine. Then the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, appealed tothe people to rebuild the Temple.

I know it may appear argumentative but all available evidence suggests that Solomon (aka Peace) as well as David (aka Beloved) were mythic only. All descriptions of their activity in the Bible have been shown to be anachronisms. It now seems that they were created in the 7th-8th century as origin legends for the existing dynasty and burgeoning Yawehist cult and fleshed out furthur in the 5th century by the Yahwehist priesthood. As has been discussed here in detail earlier, it is possible that some sort of limited temple in Jerusalem in the 7th century but nothing approaching the grandeur of the Bible legend. .....Jonssons demonstrates , with the aid of irrefutable arguments, the invalidity of Jehovahs Witnessses' theory that 607 B.C. was the year when Nebuchadnezzar II, in the eighteenth regnal year, desolated Jerusalem."
