    Valis:

I agree with you as far as people not getting nasty about it. But we (speaking as a former JW) were not allowed to discuss politics at *all*, even thought we may have had private views about what was going on in *our* world. There is no reason to get nasty... people can have their opinions and they do so, in the real world, at times, without getting nasty about it. The rebuttals that should be given should be well-researched and not based in pure opinion, but be buttressed with well-rounded facts.

I think the problem with people having their opinions is that: this is *not* about an attack on YOU, but another opinion that needs to be well read about and researched. Is what the person is saying well-founded in facts, or is it JUST an opinion? Is there another view to be had about the same general facts? How credible are sources that the person uses to buttress facts?

I like the political threads.. they have seriously made me change some hard dying opinions that I held previously. I love to watch the debate that goes on, but not to read the ad hominem attacks on people because they hold no merit. I really love that this board allows the expression of political opinions, even though sometimes it gets into a mud-slinging fest. It just happens. I would .. from here.. want people to present their opinions with a good base of well-documented facts... and hope that it could build from there.

Cerise posting about going to vote versus yet another thread on yet another beheading.

When it reaches a point of "trench warfare" which is just as bad as one not expressing their opinion at all, then yes it becomes quite tiresome.

By now, most of us already know where each other stands politically. I would think it would be wise for people to continue to express their opinions, but show discretion into how far they want to take the discussion. Far too often what happens is a total breakdown of rational debate. Of course, this is up to each individual.

It is obvious that those with a liberal point of view far outnumber those with a conservative point of view on this board, but I don't feel that anyone here has expressed views politically that merits them being labeled as a bad person. This goes for both sides of the issue. I'm sure we are mature enough to think of someone as having wrong ideas, according to our own point of view, but still seeing the value in their friendship.

I think political debate is great, it keeps us all on our toes, and each and every one of us should be open to the idea that none of us have all the answers. We receive strength through hearing others points of view and those points of view should be welcomed and not shunned.

    Valistener,

Politics on this (open)board has ALWAYS been the #1 reason for the loss of many good friends and posters. It's a catch 22.

I am the last one who doesn't want people talking about politics, but surely one could see the difference in say Cerise posting about going to vote versus yet another thread on yet another beheading. Two entirely different threads with what I would bet Canadian tire money on would have entirely different outcomes.

I agree Val, I too tire of the same thread being posted by the same poster but a different title or a small amount of differece in the message to get ones point across. Or just to stir the shit so to speak.

    Dear Valis,

I respectfully disagree. I mean, the usual reply to this kind of complaint is simply don't read the threads you aren't interested in. I don't read a lot of subjects, such as "oral sex," all the marijuana ones, etc.

It's as E-man said a long time ago, it's like a cineplex: don't go to the movies you don't want to see.

    Cheers,

    Pat
