If people wanna keep it at the fizzy level, fine. But for something a bit on the seriouser side: They set the stage for middle eastern strife by drawing borders where there was previously just sand and rock, dividing and conquoring. Additionaly, they planted the trouble tree, the mandate of israel.

Ok, back to the light banter.

    They like flat beer

    We do not!

We like real beer like budweiser, coors, erm ... Boddingtons

Well, I always make sure I tip well (if the service is good). People in the UK are used to the main cost being included in the price of the bill. The service in North America does tend to be better (unless you are at a *real* top restaurant, silver service and all that)

SP, I remember you warning me about that just before we visited Florida. Brits normally tip 5 - 10%. However, I believe that the waiting staff are paid more in the UK than the US, Brits aren't generally aware of that fact.

    >>>>>>The national minimum wage is an important cornerstone of Government strategy aimed at providing employees with decent minimum standards and fairness in the workplace. It applies to nearly all workers and sets hourly rates below which pay must not be allowed to fall. It helps business by ensuring companies will be able to compete on the basis of quality of the goods and services they provide and not on low prices based predominantly on low rates of pay. The rates set are based on the recommendations of the independent Low Pay Commission. Main (adult) rate for workers aged 22 and over £4.50 per hour from 1 October 2003 <<<<<

    £4.50 = $8.25.

I know that Brit servers are paid hourly wages.. but, if you are going to go to a foreign country, learn the customs , I do when I travel internationally. This is a sore spot for me because I work in a restaurant, as a server and about 25% of our clientele are Brits. The restaurant that I work for now hands out a little card with the check that says something like, "many of our guests ask about tipping customs..yadda yadda", and it explains all of that (in Spanish, German, etc).

That being said, my British customers are the friendliest and boy do they drink! (Oh wait, can I say nice things about Brits in this thread?)

There has been a marked improvement per this BBC article from 1999.

    British keeping their teeth

Many more people are keeping their teeth

A massive improvement in dental health has been revealed by a government survey released on Wednesday.

Half as many people are losing all their teeth as 20 years ago, and people are not only hanging on to their natural teeth, but also keeping them in better shape.

The Adult Dental Health Survey, published by the Office for National Statistics, found that 13% of adults were without a single natural tooth in 1998.

This compares to 21% in 1988, and 30% in 1978.

Last year, 83% of adults had 21 or more teeth left, compared to 73% two decades ago.

A full adult set of teeth should number 32.

I asked my huband what the fault of the British is..

    His opinion.. was

They are pig headed, arrogant, I've done it so it must be right attitudes..

I fell off my computer chair on the floor laughing my head off..

I asked him why he felt that way. His response is that he works with them and this is just the way they are.

Sheesh.. good thing he doesn't post here , he wouldn't last long.. hahahahahahaha He'd be shark food.

Oh, did I mention he's (don't tell anybody this.. american) wink wink..

Well, on my visit to London, there was two very real times that I was almost hit by a car or a huge double-decker bus! The traffic doesn't even slow down for you, lol. In California, it's the law that the pedestrians have the right-of-way.

Plus, you have Tony Blair for PM (ducking for cover!).

I love the BBC comedies that I watched when sick in my hotel room! A lot different than the vapid sit-coms in the US. I like that political jabs are common-place in the entertainment (or seemed to be) without being considered unpatriotic as in the US.

I got a kick out of, but learned to pay sharp attention to, the painted directions on the streets:

    look right, or look left.

What I didn't like was getting LOST so easily! The streets in London are a maze and once I went out for 1/2 hour jog and didn't return for 1 and 1/2 hours! Scary!

But everything else was delightful and I love being called "lovey" and thought there were so many really attractive and well-dressed people! Not to mention the spectacular buildings!

Oh! And the PUBS! They were really, really great! The atmosphere was good and so was the Guinness, etc.

    Thanks for asking, E-man!

    Pat
