Russell, like anyone who becomes a real Freemason, did it because they aspired to 'transcend' their perceived state of limitation. He wanted to accomplish very big things. Being a 'regular' guy wasn't going to cut it. It's pretty clear he succeeded and accomplished big things, a new religion based on a semi-new interpretation of the scriptures no less.
On the surface one could say that anybody can do this. Yet not everybody does. Where things get strange with the Masons is the fact that their spiritual thought and symbolism has always been in conflict with the spiritual thought and God of the Bible. The Freemason 'philosophy' places great priority on individual importance.
It promises to separate you from the masses, elevate you and make you stand out above the rest.
Which begs the question, what exactly was it that helped Russell fulfill his ambition and motivation?

He was THE FOUNDER OF MOST OF THE HERESIES, including the two-salvation system - one free salvation with the new covenant, and one without it, not free - you have to work for it. .

- Inspired by William Miller (of "the great disappointment")
- Applied pyramidology (*) and numerology to Bible interpretation
- Founder and proprietor of Zion's Watchtower publishing company
- One of the five "Bible Students" who formed what became the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society
- First secretary/treasurer and second president of that organization
- Donated the publishing company to the religious society around the time of his divorce
- Author of Studies in the Scripture, the multi-volume set that laid out the original teachings of the sect (the final volume was completed and published posthumously by his successor, Joseph Rutherford)
- His original teachings changed considerably under his successors: Rutherford, Nathan Knorr, and Fred Frantz
