JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES & Book BURNING (CDs TOO!)

    Ok, I admit it...as a Jehovah's Witness, I burned a book.

When I was about 10 years old, a sister gave my mother a box of books. I had been baptized for over a year and was quite the "little witness." In looking through that box, I came upon a book that was written about the witnesses by someone who was not a witness. Apostasy! I ran to my mother and told her about it. She suggested that I burn the book. I took it out back, matches in hand...and tried for what seemed like an hour to burn that book. The failure of that book to spontaneously burst into flames could only mean one thing....IT WAS DEMONIZED!! lol

As Witnesses, we were told that if you had anything that could be construed as spiritistic practices or of "false religion" we were to burn it no matter how much it was worth! This included heirloom pictures, gold crosses, religious jewelry, rare books etc. We were not supposed to sell these items to recoup the money...we had to burn them.

Oh, how many stories about items that would not burn...or that could not be found (but later appeared miraculously after fervent prayer!)

There are so many references in the Society's literature to Acts 19:19 where the Ephesians took all their magical books (worth 50,000 silver pieces) and burned them. The Society helps us calculate their worth in our day...a whopping $37,000!!!

The Society also helped us to realize that much of today's music is a "tool of satan" and if we have any of this "debased" music it should be quickly destroyed. (citing acts 19:19)

How many of you actually destroyed or burned books or things when you became a witness?

I threw out some stuff that wasn't "theocratic" (I HATE that word!)

You are right about their totally ridiculous rules about burning stuff. That is called superstition! That is called "looking for omens" IMO, and that is what the bible so called condemns!

    Blah.

My father owned ALL record of The Rolling Stones but got rid of them when he became a JW.

What a pity, some of them would bring in some ca$h at eBay today...

I burned my Eagles lps because of "witchy Woman". I also burned my Toto album because the sword and ring motif on the cover looked like a religious symbol. The PO had us all terrified one Thurs dedicating the whole service meetig to 'demon activity' in the circuit. Some rumor was spreading about a WWF wrestling figurine that came to life. A mind is a terrible thing to waste...................

Hey, maybe we should link this thread to the one about Linda Ronstadt?

If there's gonna be a discussion about book or CD burning triggered by disagreement or disapproval of the content, there's some people on that thread who might be interested...

I think the first thing they will say is that it's different...

    Sort of along these lines........

I emptied out my service bag 2 weeks ago. I had no idea what to do with all of the stuff. So I filled my fire pit out back and burned them. This included my first copy of the NWT. Its so surreal. I don't even know what I'm supposed to feel, but I didn't feel anything. Wierd, huh?

Some local JWs called on the one nun left living at the RC convent here. She said she would be happy to read their books and gave them one of hers to read telling them to come back and they would discuss them. When they came back, she gave them their books that she had finished reading and asked what they thought of the one she had given them. They said they had burned it. I thought it took a lot of guts to go there in the first place but to return again and tell her they had burned her property was really rude. I guess they thought it would be a real coup if they converted her! Needless to say, she was very insulted....

Everyone laughs at the suppossed dangers of crosses and other such stuff and no one seems to believe the power of the demons. When I was a child my parents moved to a bigger house and right from when we first moved in weird stuff happened. My brother (about five) would have conversations with the lady at the top of the stairs. It was put down to imagination till my dad saw her and then other stuff happened. We were sat at tea when a bowl just up and floated out into the kitchen all by itself. Screaming habdabs all around (well us kids anyway), my parents were more clued in to things and my father who had dabbled with the supernatural in the army (and told us he'd seen some pretty horrible things) wasn't fased at all. (Well he was, but he hid it better.)

He organised a "hunt" around the house for us older kids and eventually my mother found a cross nailed to the wall behind the wallpaper. They ripped the paper away, threw out the cross and for the next twenty years we had no trouble at all.

I've never doubted people when they say they've had weird experiences with the demons because it happened to us. I don't know why they need things to get in with (maybe they don't) and why they don't always get people even though they have these things. I guess it must be all part of the bigger plan in deceiving people that they aren't real. After all where's the mystery in something that you can prove and becomes common knowledge? The moment everyone believes Satan and the demons exist is the moment they loose their biggest weapon.

Whichever way you turn the cross it's all the same, it's all dangerous.

I may not be with the Watchtower on a lot of it's teachings, but this one I do agree with. Demons are dangerous.
