if there was an archaelogist that was a jdub, and he dug up the cross that jesus actually died on, would he have to burn it? probably the society would tell him to burn the horizontal wood piece to make it into a stake, so they could "prove" that jesus died on a straight pole instead of a cross

Everyone laughs at the suppossed dangers of crosses and other such stuff and no one seems to believe the power of the demons.

If only that were true. Ghosts, goblins, ghouls, pixies, imps, elves and demons all lose their power the moment you stop believing in them.

So what happened to us then? Demons are the only answer, unless you believe in Ghosts and life after death etc. I don't, because unless something else makes more sense to me, I shall continue to believe in the bible. I do however believe in Demons, but only because I had first hand experience of them, the bowl and the lady were only two things that happened, there were a lot of other stuff that I'd really rather forget. And it was mighty odd how they cleared off when the cross was removed. Why does an upturned Cross have such power in Black Magic? The symbol of the cross is only borrowed from other religions by Christianity, it's part of paganism long before the Church decided to use it to prepresent how Jesus was killed. (I do agree that it was more than likely that Jesus was killed on a cross shape, but certainly nothing so refined as the shape you see used today). But for me I can't deny the existance of demons.

    Probably nothing.

Demons are the only answer, unless you believe in Ghosts and life after death etc.

Well, ghosts, goblins, pixies, aliens, and telekinesis caused by your brother's mutant mental powers are all at least as likely as demons. But far more likely is that, you, as a child, with superstitious parents were influenced by their beliefs and behaviour. You remember strange events which probably had completely mundane explanations or didn't happen at all. Or you all ate too many of those funny mushrooms that were growing in your garden.

I don't, because unless something else makes more sense to me, I shall continue to believe in the bible. I do however believe in Demons, but only because I had first hand experience of them, the bowl and the lady were only two things that happened, there were a lot of other stuff that I'd really rather forget.

So the only reason you believe in demons is because you had an experience that you can't explain? Why pick demons above any other imaginary entities?

And it was mighty odd how they cleared off when the cross was removed.

Not really. It was part of the whole belief structure that there would be some sort of talisman involved. When this was discovered and removed, the "events" stopped. If they hadn't, of course, the search would have continued for some other "demonised" object to blame. But the cross was probably a suitable enough symbol that it put your parents' minds to rest.

Why does an upturned Cross have such power in Black Magic?

Because it's a subversion of a symbol mostly associated with Christianity. Inverting it is blasphemous and associated with the devil. Of course, in reality, it has no power, any more than a right-way-up cross does. They're symbols of belief systems, nothing more.

I got rid of all my music when in my mid-teens
Needless to say it started to accumilate again, shortly thereafter.

My younger brother got rid of a Sinead O'Connor single (45) by burning it in front of us. We were horrified (read:- stupified) than it burnt completely around the face, with a green flame, before the face was suddenly engulfed with a whoosh. We were certain it was because she was a witch (which is what precipitated the burning action in the first place).

    Derek:
The power of the mind is an incredible thing. But how do you explain this, which you've not addressed?:

We were sat at tea when a bowl just up and floated out into the kitchen all by itself.

I've remember that I've heard a lot bullshit to get rid of things
that would give me bad feelings

but I don't remember me threwing away something that I like ...

Oh !!! ... maybe icones - some are kind of scary also damnit !
(I think I did but don't remember what exactly)

But how do you explain this

    Possible explanations:

    1. laurelin "remembers" an incident that never occurred. False memories are a well-documented phenomenon

    2. laurelin was a child and influenced so strongly by her parents beliefs that she imagined this event

    3. laurelin is lying.

    4. laurelin (and whatever members of her family were present) were under the influence of a mind-altering substance (such as the mushrooms I mentioned).

    5. laurelin was the victim of a practical joke.

    6. Telekinesis

    7. Aliens

    8. Room temperature superconductivity

    8. Localised tornado

    9. Ghosts

    10. Smurfs (invisible ones of course)

    etc.....

I think the first five are all far more likely than demons. The rest are probably at least as likely.

    Derek:
Setting aside the possibility that she's making all this up (which IMHO would be an offensive accusation), I'd like to suggest that the list is more likely whittled down to:

    • 6. Telekinesis, back to the power of the mind, huh?
    • 7. Aliens, in this case higher technology perceived by a more unevolved creature to be "magic"
    • 9. Ghosts / Spirits / Inter-dimensional creatures that may or may not also be #7 (or #10)

The lengths to which the unbelieving mind (note that I don't say "skeptical", which is another thing entirely) will go, never ceases to amaze me
