Robyn,
sorry, REM, I believe that 18, 19 and 20 year olds are children. It doesn't matter if they are 25, they are still the children of their parents.
Regardless of the age of the "professionals", they were put into that war because of a lie. There were no WMD in Iraq and Sadam was not a threat to the American way of life.
You're just wrong on this issue darlin. Sure, perhaps your average 19 year old flipping burgers at Mccy D's is not an adult...These soldiers are. They are more mature than their counter parts by a whole lot. The are also professionals. No one twisted our arms or forced us to join. I'm still my mommies child, but I made a choice. You seem to think that at this age they are incapable of making the decision to join the military and fight...yet don't seem to think they're too young to vote, or have sex, or have an abortion. You need to get to know these soldeirs better before making such an unwarranted judgement.
As to the war issue....darlin, like the 9-11 commission observed THERE WAS NO LIE...get over it...like Moore needs to. Bad intelligence? I'm with you ALL DAY LONG on that issue...a LIE...well for it to be a lie it would require that Bush and his administration KNEW the intelligence was wrong...the 9-11 Commission here, the Lord Butler commission in the UK, and Vlad Putin all said that these intelligence services thought the WMD were there because of the intelligence they had gathered.
Saddam had WMD, we know that, he used them....against his own people...and against the US in the first gulf war. HE never accounted for them as was required under the UN resolutions. He was in violation of all 17 UN resolutions...he was in violation of the Cease Fire agreement with the US...he had tried to kill a former US President...he supported terrorists (though had no part that we can detect in 9-11)...Vlad Putin said he was even planning terror attacks against and in the US....but all that aside, sure...I see your point....NOT.

I'll cast my vote here. I saw the interview and I thought, too, that O'Reilly held back--I think he was trying to play fair. I also believe that Michael Moore DOES hate Pres. Bush. I have no desire to see his movie and put my hard-earned money in his wallet. Just what IS he doing with all that money, anyway??? MM is just a big, fat, ...oops, I'm sorry...I'm forgetting that I'm a Christian!
I have a 19-year-old son and I would be more than proud and honored if he joined one of the armed services. Yes, I would be fearful if he were to be sent to Iraq, but I would be proud that he loves his country and the freedom we all seem to take for granted so much that he would be willing to die for us to remain free.
Instead, he chooses to speed on the highway in his car and risk his life that way. God already saved him from one wreck two years ago. I pray that he has no more.
A child of the 60s, I used to be a bra-burning liberal feminist who believed in pro-choice. I was a Democrat who voted as such. When I became a Christian, my world view changed as well as my heart. I am a Republican, proud of it, and I will vote for George Bush (even though Maryland always votes Democrat).

Question, I am not a Christian and one reason why I am not is because of people saying how wonderful George Bush is because he is such a "good Christian".... How can anyone that lies and murders innocent people claim they are a Christian? That is not the teaching of Jesus that I have read. Until anyone can answer and justify that question, I will never follow any ideology that teaches such hatred for their fellow humans..

How can anyone that lies and murders innocent people claim they are a Christian?
So then by your definition John Kerry is not a Christian.

When I was 19, I had a child & graduated nursing school in the same year, with no parental help. When I was 21, I bought my first brand new house, once again, on my own. I was hardly a child. Did I have the best judgement? No. Hindsight is 20/20, & no 21 year old has the wisdom & experience that comes from living on this Earth for 40 years.
People that age are asked to choose a college, major in a subject that will lead to a career, make all kinds of life changing choices. Is it only the ones that choose the armed forces that are "children"?
I watch my 21 year old daughter ( who, by the way, has been quite competant since around the age of 18), in college, living her life, choosing her major, her job, her friends, etc. & to let her go to be an independant person thrills me! To cut the apron strings & allow her to be a free individual makes my heart sing. But there is nothing drastic riding on her college, with the possible exception of our pocketbook
There is everything drastic riding on the young people that join the armed forces! People's lives ride on their dong what needs to be done & doing it right. Not all the US armed forces are 18-21 years old, to be sure! But the ones that are seem to me to be some of the most together young people I have met so far. They are focused & dedicated, & to me it somehow diminishes them to refer to them as "children".

"Kids" dont make it through basic training. "Kids" dont make it to be Army Ranger, Specail Forces, Airborne, etc..etc...
While they might be young and not have the 20 years of 'civilian' exp that you may have, they are doing stuff daily that you have never dreamed up and probably couldnt even handle.
MM wouldnt make it through Basic Training LOL.
Maybe he suffers from some form of Military Envy.

I went back and visited my home town on several occasions after high school, and I ran into many firends that entered the military. The thing that struck me the most was the maturity level between them and me.
Military life does make you grow up fast.

As long as we are going to call Bush a liar , lets make sure he has some company.

Letter to President Clinton. - (D) Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, others, Oct. 9, 1998 | Source"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998 | Source
"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." - Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999 | Source
"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and th! e means of delivering them." - Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002 | Source
"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002 | Source
"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002 | Source
"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002 | Source
"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002 | Source
"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002 | Source
"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Jay Rockefeller (CFR, D, WV), Oct. 10, 2002 | Source
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct. 10, 2002 | Source
"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002 | Source
"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003 | Source
