Anyone have success with weight watchers?

What works best for you when you want to lose weight? I guess I'm mainly asking the ladies...It seems like it is always so easy for men to drop weight. It just seems to fall right off of them when they put their mind to it.

    Eat less, exercise more.

Now if I could pad that to 200 pages, and include some sort of gimmick, I'd be a millionaire.

Weight Watchers is really good. The meetings keep you motivated so I recommend going to them too.

I've lost a lot of weight with WW over the years.................whenever I gain, I've gone back for a "touch up". As I get older, it gets harder to lose though.

Of course there is nothing magical about it. If you use more energy than you consume, you will lose weight.

I like Weight Watchers; it is straightforward, nothing is forbidden, there is nothing faddy about it. It provides me with a structure. It works.

The UK and US versions of Weight Watchers are different, but they both amount to restricting your saturated fat and calorie intake. I use the WeightWatchers Online system because I travel a lot for work and can't commit to a weekly meeting.

    FD and DireStraight,

It really p*sses me off when thin people say "its so simple: eat less"

The fact is that everyone needs a certain amount of food every day. If you go a while without food, you get hungry of course and everyone's appetites vary. Some people are fussy eaters and pick at food, some people love their food and will try anything. Everyone's body is different (including metabolism).

Whilst dieting is just a numbers game (cals burned vs cals eaten) it isn't so easy as to say "eat less". In fact, some people don't eat enough of the right foods on their diets and that is why they don't lose weight.

For instance, I know someone who tried WW but wasn't eating enough of the right foods. On paper, it seemed that she ate very little indeed in terms of portion size. Therefore she had to bulk up her diet with suitable vegetables and very lean meats. You need to consume enough calories to keep your metabolism going or your body might go into "starve" mode and then fail to metabolise calories efficiently if you return to eating a little more (still within normal calorie intake I might add). Add to that any other factors such as drugs which affect weight gain / loss and you've got a lot more to think about.

So "eat less" isn't practical advice for everyone and it minimises other people's genuine struggles with their weight. If it was just a case of saying "oh thanks for saying that, now I know, how silly of me, I should just eat less! DOH!" then you wouldn't see many fat people cos not many people like being fat! If it were that easy they'd follow that simple rule and bob's yer uncle: thin people all over the place and curry houses out of business.

I admit that the individual needs to take control of their weight problem and not try to blame other factors, as Fe203grl said it's all about cals, so the individual needs to learn how to control it. However just flippantly making it sound as though fat people are just gluttons isn't representing the facts.

Also on the subject of excersize, balanced excersize (not necessarily an hour a day, but that would be fine depending upon what you were doing) is appropriate. Fat burning isn't about going 100% all of the time in excersize.

Can you tell this is a pet hate of mine?

losing weight is easy if you can keep control of yourself and take a good fat metaboliser.

i lost 2 stones (28lbs 12.6kg) in 2 months once, and i wasn't really that over weight for my size so for me that is a lot of weight, and if i ever have a spare stone that is just fat, i can lose it in a month easily, just with diet. excercise is a bonus.

imo: the best fat metaboliser on the market is Xenadrine EFX, 2-3 of those in the morning and don't eat until 5pm... you will drop weight like you wouldn't believe, it churns inside you and you feel it at work, but it's all natural so it's not like taking a drug. if you do this sort of extreme diet, you will feel weak, but take a multi vitamin to keep you from getting run down, eat fruit, drink water, but only eat one real meal a day. i do this for 1 or 2 months every year, and i always look and feel better for it, and at the end of it... well, i eat cake.

    Desib,

I think you need to find whats right for you. WW is a good way of monitoring your intake, but be careful not to use your "points" on the wrong types of food. (E.g. there are some lovely WW desserts at about 2 points, and you *could* theoretically eat about 5 of them a day = 10 points, then eat bits and pieces for the rest of the time... he he not guilty LOL)

I personally feel better when I restrict carbohydrates too. I'm not talking about Atkins where most are restricted, just a balance of not eating too much bread and rice etc. (in fact I don't eat white bread at all)

Also count the calories in alcohol - thats a killer.

I've heard some people have good results on slimmers world aswell.

Excersize I've heard should be at 60-70% of your max heart rate, there are some online sources to help you calculate that. Mine is about 120 bpm I think, for fat burning.

I'm not fat but I do struggle to maintain my weight, so I've done a lot of watching my foods!

Desi, most programs with structure can work well for you. Weight Watchers (although I have not personally used them) seems to be reasonable and has an easy program to work with, plus you have the support group and something to report to, to keep on track. I have had many friends lose at WW. I've thought about joining them myself from time to time but their meetings always are a problem for me with my long commute and lack of time.'

Sirona.. I appreciate your soapbox.. I have struggled on and off with weight for years.. when I have lost it has always been with a lot of work and people who do not understand, seem to think it is easy.. they have no clue for some how it is

A few lifestyle adjustments so you can lose weight:

Bike to work, don't drive or take the bus.

At Chineese resteraunts, order meals with white rice, not fried rice, and always order meat and veggies that are steamed, not fried.

At Mexican Resteraunts, replace the sour cream for your dishes with salsa or guacamole, and replace your beef dishes with chicken. Also, request baked items instead of fried.

When going to a resteraunt like Denny's or Applebees, replace the fries with salad
