I did it!!

I finally gave all my meeting clothes the heave-ho!! I've been on a closet cleaning binge and finally decided it was time to donate all of these old things to a local women's shelter. I figured some of these ladies may have nothing decent to wear if they need to go job hunting, so my old meeting clothes, shoes, and handbags would at least serve a noble purpose in their recycled lifetimes.

For some reason, I hung on to them for the last several years, knowing full-well that I would never set foot in a Kingdom Hall ever again. Yet part of me thought that maybe they would come in handy for interviews, social occasions that required a bit of dressing up, or a nice evening out on the town. HA!! I ended up buying new never-been-to-the-KH clothes (including pantsuits) that worked perfectly well!! I remember being so filled with anxiety when I went to an interview wearing one of my new pantsuits, thinking I've never dressed like this for an interview before, always dresses or skirt and top. Well surprise, surprise!! I got hired on the spot!

How long did it take you to relieve yourself of your Kingdom Hall wardrobe? Were there any items that you kept? How much closet space did you gain from getting rid of all those extra meeting clothes?

    Love, Scully

Congratulations on your good deed and cleaning your closet. I gave away my clothes to a women's shelter about a year ago. It feels good to have space for your new clothes!

Yay for you! It feels great to get rid of everything that was associated with the JW's.

Good for you, Scully! I have been hanging onto a single box of old literature in the same way! At first, I thought I might need it if I ever had to argue with my family on why my left (I thought I could use their own literaure against them.) Now, I don't know why I am hanging onto it at all! I thought about selling the stuff on ebay ... it is amazing what people will pay for old watchtower crap! The box is still sitting in the back of some closet in the basement.

As far as my Kingdom Hall wardrobe ... I slowly phased it out, giving most of it to goodwill. A lot of it I kept because I can use it to wear to my current job. But, when I first left the org, I went through a phase where I would not even where a skirt to work because they felt like Kingdom Hall clothes!!! I got over it, and wear a skirt or dress every once in a while.

I've still got a bunch of goofy ties that have been hanging in my closet unused for almost 3 years now LOL

Ha, I still have a couple of old meeting dresses/skirts, etc that were a little more fashionable. I keep thinking the same thing... I might need to dress up for something. I also have several nice dress coats that I will probably NEVER wear again, but they were quite expensive so I keep 'em. *sigh*

I need the space too. BUT I did get rid of about 75% of my old dub clothes, so I'm one up on hubby who hasn't gotten rid of ANYTHING! He still has a closet full of dress shirts, sport coats, suits, ties, etc that he will NEVER wear. (I hope, yuck.)

    Ditto the remaining literature.

I kept mine for a year after my last meeting, because i had to use them for my job at sears. As soon as that ended it threw them away. I still have a couple of dresses, but only because my mom gave them to me and they have sentimental value.

Good for you Scully! I know how you feel. It was a big deal for me to toss out an old meeting suit several years ago. Fortunately Nina didn't notice as she was still going back then. But it felt really good.

Well, you helped someone out there with these clothes Scully. Good move.

I still have my JW clothes, full of dust. They don't fit anymore so they should go.
