Do You Actually Believe In The "Power of Prayer"???

Me believing in prayer or not doesn't have any representation on how I want other people to get better.

Hope and prayer are two seperate things. I hope I don't get into an accident on the way home. I hope people find a cure for cancer. I hope people with cancer get better.

I believe in the power of people doing things though. If I saw a baby drowning in a pool, I would dive in and save it. I wouldn't sit back and pray that someone saves it, because if I'm the only one there, the baby will die.

That statement was just like this:

Someone believes in lucky rabbit feet, then rubs the foot for good luck that his plane doesn't crash during the landing. Then asks me if I believe in the rabbit foot and I respond with a No, I don't think it has any outcome. Then gets mad at me thinking I want the plane to crash.

I certainly hope Ian gets better!! That's a given. But, I've seen prayers go unanswered many times. I'm not a believer in cosmic energy. I believe in doctors and chiropractors but I don'tbelieve in the "healing power of stones". Now if someone was ill and a person suggested that we use stones to make a person feel better, I would have to feel that if it made you (and the ill person) feel better----go for it. I just don't believe in that.

excellent point, i was thinking the same thing, what does believing in prayer or not have to do with Wanting someone to get better

yet we have seen over and over how some believers share this one size fit all-

we all saw the basic mindset in wt, to question wt - questioning god, and now we see that same basic mindset-

"I pray for Leroy to get better, that means i want to see him get well, since you DON'T PRAY THAT MEANS YOU WANT TO SEE HIM STAY SICK"

it is this type of reasoning that has made me reexamine so many commonly held views connected with religious belief system

    how sad

I honestly don't know what I believe any more. I have only prayed a few times since my choice to never got back to the hall.. Less then I can count on one hand. Do I think I was less blessed or had less answers because of my lack of prayer. Not really.

    Some "reason" with their emotions.

I DON'T BELIEVE IN PRAYER OR GOD STEPPING IN AND SAVING THE DAY.

I DOUBT THAT MASS PRAYERS HAVE ANY REAL EFFECT ON ANOTHERS ILLNESS.

I THINK "NOT BELIEVE" THAT AN ILL PERSON CAN HAVE SOME EFFECT ON HIS ILLNESS IF HE IS IN THE RIGHT MIND SET. I AM AWARE OF SOME EVENTS THAT NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. I AM AWARE OF SOME RECOVERIES THAT DENY EXPLANATION.

I KNOW FOR A FACT, THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT I DO NOT KNOW OR UNDERSTAND. I ALSO KNOW THIS IS TRUE OF EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM.

BASED ON THE ABOVE I COME TO THIS CONCLUSION.

WHAT THE HELL! WHY NOT DO IT? IS IT GOING TO HURT ANYONE? NO. WILL IT CHEER UP THE ILL PERSON? MAYBE. WILL IT HAVE ANY EFFECT? I DON'T KNOW. WILL IT DRAW SOME PEOPLE TOGETHER IN THE EFFORT AND MAKE THEM FEEL GOOD? PROBABLY.

I WONDER WHY THIS ATTEMPT TO HELP SOMEONE TRIGGERS THE NEED IN OTHERS TO PROVE IT IS NONSENSE?

WHY CAN'T WE JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE? IT FEELS LIKE ANOTHER BELIEF OR DISBELIEF IS BEING PUSHED ON THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE, "THEY MUST BE SHOWN THE ERROR OF THEIR WAYS".

I don't mind if George Carlin prays to Joe Pesci (although I'd be praying for Joe Pesci, in a nicely wrapped box on Christmas morning, he's yummy), so why should he mind if I pray to whatever it is I pray to? I'm with Country Girl, it does no harm to pray, unlike lots of other things people do. Why should those who don't want to pray be so bitter towards those who do? In fact, that sounds pretty emotional to me.

A 50% return rate is not so bad, anyway. If I got 50% of the jobs I applied for, I'd be very happy.

I'm not bitter at all. If you are happy with prayer, then go for it. I don't believe that it has any effect on the outcome what-so-ever. What could, is if someone who is ill knows that a lot of people have him in their thoughts, it could change their attitude and give them a higher chance of survival. I believe a positive outlook does make a greater chance of survival.

My only beef is if prayer is the ONLY thing that is done. If I'm lost in the desert, I'd hope my family went out to look for me instead of pray that I found my way out.
