Man has reason to fear his destruction.....especially now.
The earth WAS believed to be a target for a meteorite that was later discovered going to miss us. The earth WAS hit by one in Siberia in the early 1900's that devastated a thousand square miles and destroyed and leveled everything in that area.
Man HAS the capabilities to destroy himself and almost did when the Cuban Missil Crisis happened.
Not to sound like a doomsdayer......but the destruction of the planet and mankind is a real possibility and this is what inspires many of these movies.
