Some very interesting viewpoints here... it seems most are comprised of the feeling that God is a vengeful, jealous God.
Here is my unique spin that may partially explain the "jealous God" phenomenon: What if God isn't jealous at all? In fact, what if He doesn't even have a personality?
I feel that this could be viewed better from the other viewpoint, that is, that we need to worship God. Not for any fear of vengeance, etc., but simply because it is what we are here to do. A scripture I often like to use is "God is love", and thus, love is God... we are here to worship love in it's purest form, unconditional, and do the loving thing whenever we can.
Farkel's analogy of the parent does not feel complete to me... although it can be amended to make it a little more accurate. Sure, any parent that requires worship from their child or else is a twisted individual, but, no parent needs this. No parent needs their child to look up to them. But, take a look from the child's viewpoint. What if a child turned away from their parent (just like those "Adam and Eve" characters)? They would have no source for food and water, they would be all alone. But, to live here on Earth, all we need is food and drink, and in looking to our parents for nourishment, we get that nourishment.
But wait, "Man cannot live on bread and water alone"! Ummm.. yes we can. Here and now, at least. What if there really is more than here and now though? We need something more. Maybe God provides that something when we look to him. Just like a battery, on our own, both us and God are spiritually inert, just as the battery and the bulb are lifeless. But when connected... AMAZING things can happen, including light being made where before there was none...
So again, IMHO, God doesn't need to be worshipped, we need to worship God (or connect the cables to the battery) to get what we need spiritually (and I use that in the loosest sense of the word). As for Jehovah, Yahweh, Ba'al, Allah, or whatever other jealous "Gods" are being worshipped... I respectfully decline your offer for the position of "Fearful Worshipper", as I just found a way better paying position as "Loving Believer". .
