    Incense,

p.s. i do have to add however that the ocean responds to the Moon's pull, but that doesn't mean it is concious it just has something to do with physics...

I like the way you are thinking deeply I think that's good.

All Physics is is the study of the natural world around us. It can't tell you if a cell is conscious,,or if a electron is conscious with any certainty (I think??),,but some theories imply as much,,in that there is instant comunication and to me that implies consciousness maybe not like a human brain has consciousness,, but consciousness just the same.

When you get into sub-atomic particles you get into metaphors that only very crudely discribe them. We have no pictures of anything below an atom (I think). We know nothing of what electrons look like it is all theory. So things get pretty spooky when we talk about sub atomic particles because they are nothing like our world at the scale we function.

Are you sure? Just kidding. But that happens beween humans too, and they are conscious, therefore...

not if one of them is comatose... (jk)

i never thought of it that way before. well, i'll be the first to say that man has only uncovered the tip of the iceberg of everything there is to know about the universe...that "out-of-thebox" title should have clued me in...thank you for the post, very thought-provoking.

i know these aren't subatomic, but check it out anyway, there's lots of cool images: http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/micro/gallery.html

What practical difference does this make in your life, though?

Maybe the fact that everything is interconnected could be the answer to life after death and things that happen within nature like the tsunami. My husband read an article about what the varying religions thought about the tsunami and one religion, eastern of some kind, made the point that the balance of negative and positive energy was off. If we really are interconnected it seems like that would be valid. I know nothing of physics, but it sounds like you guys have some awesome points that reminds me of the eastern philosophies. I know it's probably a "duh" moment.

It's practical, because if you guys are right, then indifference to life could be the deciding factor in life or death. If a plant is conscious and we are interconnected to the plant and we needlessly senselessly kill this plant to build another mall, then we are killing ourselves.

personally, i cringe if a beautiful tree gets mowed over for a starbucks or blockbuster video.

my favorite tree is the aspen. i was at this park one summer in colorado, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of them, and the wind came and made them shiver - it was like millions of tiny bells. i'll never forget it...

THE SELF AWARE UNIVERSE -- Amit Goswami. A professor of physics at the University of Oregon and a member of its Institute of Theoretical Science,

Goswami is convinced, along with a number of others who subscribe to the same view, that the universe, in order to exist, requires a conscious sentient being to be aware of it. Without an observer, he claims, it only exists as a possibility. And as they say in the world of science, Goswami has done his math. Marshalling evidence from recent research in cognitive psychology, biology, parapsychology and quantum physics, and leaning heavily on the ancient mystical traditions of the world, Goswami is building a case for a new paradigm that he calls "monistic idealism," the view that consciousness, not matter, is the foundation of everything that is.

    Ok, well...

    What is consiousness?

    What is life?

Ok, I asked this on another thread, but bare with me.

Do you believe in ghosts? Why? Consiousness and life, is it reliant on things we see? If it is not, then anything is possible because there is so much we cannot see and are notaware of at this time. Frank brought up Atoms and such. There was a time when man had no clue what an atom was or did. Now, we have molecular biology.

In a hundred years, if we haven't killed ourselves, what will know about awareness?

Maybe you guys are pioneers of something that will be mainstream thought....

    Regarding plants being conscious,

There actually has been written, documented experiments in which plants reacted in a fashion, similar to that of a man hooked up to a polygraph under a level of stress, when one of the plant's leaves were burned. There has also been strong evidence which points to a level of cummiunon among animals and plants. I have written documentation that points to an experiment that was conducted involving some brine shrimp introduced to a plant. According to Lynne McTaggart's The Field when the shrimp died there was a noticable reaction from the plant as indicated through a transmission. It often makes me wonder if we truly do take plants for granted. Animals and Humans have hierarchies and societies, why not plants?
