The original figures are in pounds (£) Stirling. I have also approximated them into US Dollars. These are as appeared in today's Times:

    Austria: £730,000 / $1,300,000.

    Canada: £17,000,000 / $31,000,000.

    China: £1,350,000 / $2,500,000.

    Finland: £1,770,000 / $3,100,000.

    France: £31,000,000 / $59,000,000.

    Germany: £14,000,000 / $26,000,000.

    Italy: £2,120,000 / $4,000,000.

    Japan: £15,600,000 / $27,000,000.

    Eman:

I'm afraid that in such things as in so many others self-interest plays a large part! We would like to believe that nations acted out of neighborliness but it may be in their national interest or reflect their own point of view.

OK, I'm also a cynic!! But I don't think you get too far with having a "league of donors" table.

Otherwise we'd pay more attention to how certain nations fared in the Olympics.

    cheers, Ozzie

Eman, doesnt that UK ammount include the Governments pledge and also the 25million that we the public have raised? Perhaps the other nations have not included the public response and those quotes will double. As far as I know Austrailia has now given over 60 million$

In any case, its great to see that aid is being given

On a per capita basis that's quite a hit, isn't it?

Yes! and it something to be proud of Ozzie, a lot of people are in dire need of it and are going to benifit by it.

Isn't this kinda tacky, like the other thread chastizing people for "not doing enough"? Isn't tooting one's own horn a little distasteful? Charity should be private & come from the heart. Why should it become a popularity contest?

I suspect the amount from the US is only the amount the US feels comfortable risking by running it through the UN. I am really proud of my fellow Americans. I have just seen some info on the news that told of extraordinary generosity on the part of the American people. I am not going to list amounts, etc. here for public consumption though.

Bottom line: Americans are very independent, & no one tells them what to donate, & no one jacks them up via raising taxes without a fight. They don't need snide little comments from the likes of Jan Egeland to tell them what to do or shame them into anything. The American public knows what to do & are doing it. The ones that can afford to & are in a position to do so (many), have been extrememly generous.
Those that are able, are very big hearted & can be counted on. They are not "stingy". They just don't respond well to being brow beaten or ordered to do much of anything. They know what they should do, & they do it. Really, this smacks once again of service numbers posted.

Gypsy, how many people have suggested the USA people are "stingy" in this current crisis? I wouldnt pay attention to the gripes of some anti USA sentiments in tragedies such as this. It is pretty shallow of people to think that Americans are not as big hearted as any other nation, we are all human observers affected in the same way but the real issue is those who are not observers but are caught up in all of this.

The real amount of any given nation is not yet know but I'm pretty sure many will have egg on their face when they see how good the American people have been in raising funds and other aids in this crisis.

Is that true? Is the 25 million included in that figure?

I gave and will give at the gasoline pump. Let the Saudies handle it, and maybe divert some of their billions from terrorist financing to relief support. Though I doubt the thought ever enter their minds.
