Beatles get the edge. Yeah, the Stones are still around, and probably are better musicians, but outside of Elvis, there insn't another act that has had a greater singular impact on popular music.
NOBODY mentioning Jimi Hendrix? for shame...

That's because Jimi deserves his own thread. He took on the white dominated genre and won.
I was a JW teenager when the Beatles and Stones first appeared on the scene. Unofficially, the Beatles were "good" and the Stones were "bad." You could have Beatles allbums but not the Stones.
I liked the Beach Boys thinking they were more clean cut...boy was I wrong.
Blondie
It's been established by the thread that these two bands are as pure as rock gets...my question (and attempted thread theft) is, what band NOW is closest to old school rock?
I like the Beatles, I didn't like the Stones or Mick Jagger.

I dunno about "old rock school" but I love U2! Awesome rockin' music and long lived.
Bare Nake Ladies and Counting Crows are among my current faves. But I really don't listen much anymore. I'm becoming an old fart.

Yeah, Terry, but you'd change your mind if you could my Andy's sexy impression of Mick's dance moves. He does an excellent impression of Mick doing Start Me UP live. I mean Wow.
Im a big stones fan, they are still putting out good new albums.Bridges to babylon was really good. The stones best work came after the beatles had already broke up!~The stones tryed to copy the beatles a little bit early on,but hit thier mark in the early 70's.Sticky fingers, some girls, black and blue, its only rocknroll, how could I not mention Tattoo you.The stones represent what rock n roll is.They stopped trying to be "trippy" and deep, and just rocked about that rock lifestyle, with no apologies.Unless youve listened to stones post brian jones era{1969-present)you don't know what your missing.
Even in the 80's they had great underated albums,I already mentioned Tatto You,also Undercover was very underated along with Dirty Work.
Just the sheer magnitude of music that has been put out gives the stones the edge IMO,while the beatles were no more than a generational icon, who revolutionized rock, but haven't put out music in 35 years, while the stones keep rockin into the new millenium.
During the time both groups were performing, I preferred the Beatles. Now I prefer to Rolling Stones. There have been so many great groups and I like Creedance Clearwater Revival over most.

The Beatles. They changed rock and roll forever. John, Paul, George and Ringo even influenced the Stones.
I used to save my lunch money to by LP records. Glad that was way before Michael Jackson bought the Lennon/McCartney catalog.
