Well I just want to say thank you to all for so many fine posts. I certainly did not expect so many so soon and with such depth. I appreciate all the references as they provide a pathway for me to delve deeper; as mentioned, I have wondered on this for a long time and for whatever reason it has not left me. I will look forward to more.

Just to add another twist. John the Baptist denied being Elijah while Jesus confirmed that indeed he was Eligah. The apparent contradiction is resloved if one considers that Jesus saw the function and station and the spiritual reality while John was denying the literal reincarnation.
Regarding the two witnesses of Revelation, another rendering is that they are Muhammed and Ali, the twin messengers of God in sac cloth who will endure 1260 years. The lunar Muslim calendar year 1260 coincides with solar calendar year of AD 1844. That year shows up in five or six religions as a key year in the history of humanity. Food for thought.
